The Gabo Donghak Revolution Memorial Tower was erected on October 3, 1963, at the Hwangtohyun Battle Site, the location of the first battle and victory of the Donghak Peasant Army. Subsequently, the Hwangtohyun Battle Site was designated as Historic Site No. 295 on December 10, 1981. In 1983, a site of approximately 148,760 square meters (45,000 pyeong) adjacent to the battlefield was secured, and a memorial hall was constructed by the end of that year. The site has since evolved into its current state through several key developments: the expansion and reopening of the current memorial hall, the relocation of the Memorial Foundation, the replacement of the General Jeon Bong-jun statue, and the establishment of the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Park. Through these changes, the Hwangtohyun Battle Site has firmly established itself as a true sanctuary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. However, despite these 60 years of development, there has been a lack of comprehensive documentation detailing which entities were involved and what processes were followed to shape the site into its present form. Recognizing the need for such a record, I have compiled this article titled "Trends in the Commemorative Projects of the Hwangtohyun Battle Site.”

동학농민군의 최초의 전투지이자 승전지인 황토현 전적지에 1963년 10월 3일 갑오동학혁명기념탑이 건립되었다. 이후 황토현 전적지는 1981년 12월 10일 사적 제295호로 지정되었으며 1983년 전적지 인근 4만 5,000여 평의 부지를 확보하고, 그해 말 기념관을 건립하였다. 이후 현 기념관 증축 개관, 기념재단 이전, 전봉준 장군 동상 교체, 동학농민혁명 기념공원 조성 등의 변화를 통해 현재의 모습을 갖추었다. 이로써 황토현 전적은 명실상부한 동학농민혁명의 성지로서 자리매김하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 황토현 전적이 60여 년 동안 어떤 주체에 의해 어떤 과정을 거쳐 지금의 모습을 갖추었는지 그 변화를 일목요연하게 정리한 글이 없어 아쉽게 생각하던 터에 정리의 필요성을 느껴 다음과 같이 ‘황토현 전적의 기념사업 추이’라는 제목으로 글을 정리하였다.
