The Hired Man (2013), by Aminatta Forna is a novel that explores the psychological impacts of war. The story is set in a small Croatian town where Duro Kolak, is hired to renovate a house for a family of tourists. As Duro works on the house, he begins to reveal his own past as a survivor during the Croatian War of Independence. Through Duro’s experiences, the novel examines how war trauma can affect an individual’s psyche in both conscious and unconscious ways. Psychoanalytic theory suggests that unconscious desires and conflicts can have a powerful influence on human behaviour, and the novel demonstrates this through Duro’s character. Duro’s memories of the war are repressed, and as he renovates the house, he is forced to confront the traumas of his past. The novel also explores how Duro’s experiences in the war have influenced his relationships with women and his own sense of masculinity. The present paper implies that addressing the suppressed past is an essential, however painful, step toward healing and recovering one’s shattered self.
