Comparison of Physical Properties and Computerized Radiation Therapy Plans according to Radiation source: Monte Carlo Simulation using Phantom

This study aims to characterize the physical properties following x-ray, proton, and heavy ion radiation treatment and to compare the treatment plans accordingly. After each radiation treatment, the physical properties were observed using a box phantom simulation from MatRad open-source Monte Carlo simulation software. In addition, the TG-119 phantom was used to establish and compare the computerized radiation treatment plans. A one-portal technique was used for the comparison of the physical characteristics. Further, for the comparison of the radiation treatment plans, seven portals were used for x-ray proton and heavy ion radiation, and two portals were used for proton and heavy ion radiation. The box phantom simulation results demonstrate that the average target dose of x-ray, proton, and heavy ion radiation was 1.97±0.21 Gy, 1.99±0.05 Gy, and 2.00±0.04 Gy, respectively. In the TG-119 phantom simulation, x-ray, proton, and carbon-ion radiation resulted in an average outer target dose of 1.66±0.03 Gy, 1.67±0.03 Gy, and 1.67±0.02, and an average absorbed dose at the core of 0.58±0.18 Gy, 0.58±0.21 Gy, and 0.64±0.20 Gy, respectively. The simulated results of the physical properties and computerized treatment plans using the three types of radiation from this study are expected to serve as the preliminary data for establishing computerized radiation treatment plans and implementing heavy ion therapy devices.

본 연구의 목적은 X-선, 양성자, 중입자를 이용한 방사선치료 시 방사선에 따른 물리적 특징을 확인하고 방사선치료계 획을 비교하고자 한다. MatRad 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션 프로그램에서 제공하는 box 팬톰을 이용하여 방사선에 따른 물리적 특징을 확인하고, TG-119 팬톰을 통해 방사선전산화치료계획을 수립하여 비교하였다. 물리적 특징 비교를 위해 1문 조사를 시행하고, 방사선치료계획 비교를 위해 X-선은 7문조사, 양성자와 중입자는 각각 2문 조사를 시행하였다. Box 팬톰을 이용한 방사선 별 target 평균선량은 X-선, 양성자, 중입자 각각 1.97±0.21, 1.99±0.05, 2.00±0.04 Gy였다. TG-119 팬톰을 이용한 방사선 별 outerTarget과 core 평균선량은 X-선, 양성자, 중입자 각각 1.66±0.03, 1.67±0.03, 1.67±0.02, 0.58±0.18, 0.58±0.21, 0.64±0.20 Gy였다. 본 연구를 통해 방사선에 따른 물리적 특성과 전산화치료계획에 대한 결과는 방사선전산화치료계획 수립과 중입자 치료기 도입에 따른 기초 자료로 활용될 것이라 사료된다.
