This study explored the dynamic process through which psychological contracts are formed and transformed within the study-abroad experiences of three Chinese master’s students enrolled at University A in South Korea. Narrative inquiry as proposed by Clandinin and Connelly (2000) was employed as the research method, and data were collected through first and second in-depth interviews as well as additional Zoom interviews. The data were analyzed using narrative content analysis to derive and categorize core narrative units. The findings indicate that, prior to studying abroad, participants formed a priori psychological contracts based on expectations such as overcoming academic inferiority, referring to successful family role models, and compensating for limited academic capital. However, during the actual study-abroad process, administrative complexities, imbalances in professorstudent interactions, and insufficient understanding of academic requirements generated conflicts with these prior expectations. Rather than accepting these conflicts as passive outcomes, participants actively reconstructed their psychological contracts by redefining the value of studying abroad and exercising agency. This study demonstrates that the psychological contract perspective can be extended as an analytical framework for understanding the relational dynamics between international students and universities in multicultural higher education contexts. It further suggests that the international student experience is not merely a process of adaptation but an active process of relational reconstruction.

본 연구에서는 한국에 소재한 A대학교 석사과정에 재학 중인 중국인 유학생 3명을 대상으로 유학 경험 속에서 형성되고 변화하는 심리적 계약의 역동적 과정을 탐색하였 다. 연구 방법으로는 Clandinin과 Connelly(2000)의 내러티브 탐구를 적용하였으며, 1 차 및 2차 심층 면담과 추가적인 ZOOM 면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 자료 분석은 내러티브 내용 분석을 통해 핵심 서사 단위를 도출하고 범주화하였다. 연구 결과, 참여 자들은 유학 이전 성적 열등감 극복, 가족 내 성공 모델 참조, 학력 자본 보완 등에 대한 기대를 바탕으로 선험적인 심리적 계약을 형성하였다. 그러나 실제 유학 과정에서 행 정 제도의 번거로움, 교수-학생 간의 상호작용 불균형, 학업 요구에 대한 이해 부족 등 은 기존 기대와 충돌을 일으켰다. 참여자들은 이러한 충돌을 수동적인 결과로 받아들 이기보다, 유학의 가치를 재정의하며 심리적 계약을 주체적으로 재구성해 나갔다. 본 연구는 심리적 계약 관점이 다문화 고등교육 환경에서 유학생과 대학 간의 관계적 역 동성을 이해하는 분석적 틀로 확장될 수 있음을 보여주며, 유학생의 경험이 단순한 적 응이 아닌 능동적인 관계 재구성 과정임을 시사한다.
