This study aims to examine the perceptions that Donghak adherents held regarding the monarch and the state during the second uprising of the Donghak forces in the period of the 1894 Gabo Japanese Invasion(Gabo Waeran), and to investigate the causes and realities of the Donghak uprising. The study employs a literature review methodology. Specifically, this study addresses the following: how Donghak adherents perceived King Gojong and the Joseon dynasty in 1894; the nature and causes of the second uprising; and the factors that led to its eventual defeat. The study pursues four analytical objectives. First, it uncovers the historical reality of the 1894 Japanese invasion, which has been obscured by the misleading designation of the ‘Gabo Reforms.’ Second, it analyzes the perceptions of the state and the monarch held by Donghak forces who mobilized under the banner of expelling the Japanese. Third, it examines the causes that triggered the second Donghak uprising. Fourth, it investigates the factors that led to the ultimate defeat of the Donghak Army. The findings of this study are as follows. First, the so-called Gabo Reforms is revealed to have been no more than a byproduct of the Gabo Waeran-a war that Japan initiated through unauthorized military invasion. Second, the Donghak adherents, who had voluntarily disbanded following the Jeonju Treaty out of concern for national security, are shown to have possessed a form of autonomous political consciousness grounded in Monarchical Nationalism(Geunwang ideology) and Joseon-Centrism(Joseon Junghwa ideology). Third, the second uprising of these Donghak adherents is demonstrated to have been initiated in direct response to King Gojong’s secret orders, conveyed through separate royal envoys. Fourth, the Donghak forces-who had risen as righteous armies(uibyeong) of the Gabo Waeran were ultimately annihilated by a convergence of hostile forces: the pro-Japanese puppet government’s troops, the Japanese military, and Confucian literati who misread the situation. Their defeat was compounded by the tragic circumstance in which the very royal command that had authorized their uprising was suppressed and usurped.

이 연구의 목적은 1894년 갑오왜란 시기 동학군의 2차 봉기를 중심으로 당시 동학인들이 가졌던 군주와 국가에 대한 인식을 살펴보고 동학군의 봉기 계기와 실상을 고찰함에 있다. 연구의 방법은 문헌 연구를 중심으로 하였다. 이 연구의 내용은 첫 번째로 갑오경장이란 미명 하에 가려진 1894년의 왜란의 실상을 파헤쳤다. 둘째로 척왜를 기치로 일어난 동학군의 2 차 봉기에 관련하여 그들의 국가관과 군주관을 분석하였다. 셋째로1894년의 동학군 봉기의 계기를 살펴 보았다. 넷째로 동학군 패배의원인을 고찰하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째로 갑오경장은 왜인들이 무단으로 침략하여 일으킨 전쟁인 갑오왜란의 부산물일 뿐임을 밝혔다. 둘째로 나라의 안위를 염려하여 전주화약을 맺고 해산한 동학인들은 신존왕주의와 조선중화론이라는 주체적인 의식을 지녔음을 보았다. 셋째로이러한 동학인들의 2차 봉기는 별입시를 통한 고종의 밀지에 의해 일어났다. 넷째로 갑오왜란의 의병인 동학군은 고종의 어명이 갈취당하는 불운한 상황에 있었으므로, 친일괴뢰정부의 관군과 일본군, 그리고상황을 오인한 유생들에 의해 패배했다.
