This study was conducted to empirically analyze college students’ perceptions of plagiarism and the current state of education in the context of the crisis of academic integrity caused by the proliferation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. It also aims to suggest directions for effective plagiarism prevention education. For this purpose, a survey was conducted with 573 students enrolled in a four-year private university in Seoul to investigate their experiences with plagiarism education at the secondary and higher education levels, their actual use of generative AI, and their ethical awareness. The research findings are as follows: First, while 58.8% of respondents had experienced plagiarism prevention education during secondary education, the content was predominantly focused on copyright protection norms within information and communication ethics or human rights education. In particular, educational experiences directly linked to academic writing were relatively low, confirming a lack of systematic connection to higher education. Second, only 42.7% of students received plagiarism prevention education after entering university, which is lower than the secondary level, and most of this education was conducted through introductory writing courses. Third, 84.8% of respondents reported having used generative AI, and 71.3% actively utilize it for completing assignments. Utilization patterns varied clearly by major: STEM students primarily used AI for coding, while Humanities and Social Science students used it for essay writing and summarization. Fourth, 87.5% of students using AI felt ethical anxiety regarding plagiarism, confirming a high demand for new research ethics guidelines following technical applications. These results suggest that rather than strictly banning AI tools, there is an urgent need to establish a practical and structural research ethics education system that includes AI literacy. This study provides a policy basis for higher education institutions to prepare customized AI utilization guidelines considering the characteristics of each major and to strengthen prevention-oriented educational strategies so that students can develop a sense of academic responsibility.
