In W. B. Yeats’s poetry, the ‘tree’ is not merely a natural object but a spiritual being endowed with divinity, serving as a significant image that the poet frequently employs. This paper examines how trees function as symbols in various poems by Yeats and explores their connection to his philosophical ideas. Influenced by diverse fields such as ancient mythology, theosophy, and occultism, Yeats constructed a unique poetic world in which trees played a crucial role from his early works onward. This study investigates the role of tree symbolism in Yeats’s poetry, analyzing how he artistically embodies his philosophy concerning the relationship between nature and humanity, the tension between ideals and reality, and the concept of timeless eternity.

B. 예이츠의 시에서 ‘나무’는 단순한 자연물이 아니라 신성을 지닌 영적 존재로, 시인이 자주 활용하는 중요한 이미지로 기능한다. 본 논문은 예이츠의 여러 시에서 나무가 상징으로서 어떤 역할을 하는지 살펴보고, 그것이 그의 철학적 사 상과 어떻게 연결되는지를 탐구한다. 고대 신화, 신지학, 신비주의 등 다양한 분야의 영향을 받은 예이츠는 초기 작품부터 나무가 중요한 역할을 하는 독창적인 시적 세계 를 구축하였다. 본 연구는 예이츠의 시에서 나무 상징의 역할을 분석하며, 그가 자연 과 인간의 관계, 이상과 현실 사이의 긴장, 그리고 시간의 경계를 초월한 영원의 개념 에 관한 철학을 어떻게 예술적으로 구현했는지를 밝힌다.
