This study explored the relationship between pet ownership and interpersonal competence and emotional regulation among university students in the Honam region. A survey was conducted with 214 students from four universities in the region, and the data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 28.0 and PROCESS macro v4.2 to perform descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and moderation analysis. The results indicated that students who owned pets showed significantly higher levels of interpersonal competence and emotional regulation than those who did not. A significant positive correlation was also observed between interpersonal competence and emotional regulation. Furthermore, pet ownership was found to play a moderating role in strengthening the relationship between the two variables(ΔR²=.023, p<.05). These findings suggest that experiences of interaction with pets may be associated with enhanced social skills and emotional stability among university students. This study provides foundational data for the development of pet-assisted programs aimed at improving the psychosocial adjustment of young adults.

본 연구는 호남권 대학생을 대상으로 반려동물 양육 여부와 대인관계 유능성 및 정서조절 간의 관계를 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 호남권 4개 대학의 재학생 214명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하고, SPSS Statistics 28.0 과 PROCESS macro v4.2를 활용하여 기술통계, 상관관계, 그리고 조절효과를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 반려동물을 양육하는 대학생은 비양육자보다 대인관계 유능성과 정서조절 수준이 모두 유의하게 높았으며, 대인관계 유능성과 정서조절 간에는 유의한 정적 상관이 확인되었다. 또한 반려동물 양육 여부는 대인관계 유능성과 정서조절 간의 관계를 강화하는 조절적 역할을 보이는 것으로 분석되었다(ΔR²=.023, p<.05). 이러한 결과는 반려동물과의 상호작 용 경험이 대학생의 사회적 능력과 정서적 안정에 긍정적으로 작용함을 시사하였다. 본 연구는 청년층의 심리사회 적 적응 향상을 위한 반려동물 기반 프로그램 개발에 기초자료를 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
