This study focused on the growing importance of public libraries in Korea amid the rapid transition to a multicultural society. At present, multicultural services in libraries remain limited due to the lack of institutional and policy foundations, relying largely on individual libraries’ voluntary efforts, thereby revealing structural constraints. To address this issue, the study systematically examined the research trends and developmental trajectory of multicultural library services in Korea. A total of 409 papers indexed in the Korea Citation Index (KCI), published between 2002 and 2025, were analyzed. Abstracts and author keywords from each paper were extracted and analyzed using text mining methods. The research period was divided into three phases: Phase 1 (2002–2010), Phase 2 (2011–2018), and Phase 3 (2019–2025). Analytical methods such as keyword co-occurrence analysis, topic modeling (LDA), and mind mapping were employed to identify thematic shifts across time. The analysis revealed that Phase 1 centered on building the technological foundation, including multicultural material collection and organization, librarian training, and policy linkage discussions. Phase 2 emphasized the expansion of regionally specialized services, policy-driven operational strategies, and the preservation of cultural resources with greater inclusiveness. Phase 3 highlighted the integration of intelligent technologies, including artificial intelligence, chatbots, and the metaverse, alongside active research on information welfare and cultural convergence. These findings indicate that libraries have evolved from simple information providers into core platforms for social integration and inclusion. In particular, strengthening information welfare, implementing regionally tailored services, and developing intelligent convergence services emerged as key future directions. In sum, multicultural library service research in Korea has progressed from building a technological foundation, through operational and policy sophistication, to the current stage of intelligent convergence services. Accordingly, future library policies and services should be designed based on user-centeredness, regional responsiveness, and technological integration. Through this process, public libraries can serve as inclusive and sustainable institutions, playing a leading role in fostering social cohesion in a multicultural society.

본 연구는 다문화 사회로 급변하는 한국에서 공공도서관의 역할 증대 필요성에 주목하였다. 현재 도서관 의 다문화 서비스는 제도적·정책적 기반이 미비하고 개별 도서관의 자율적 시도에 머물러 구조적 한계를 보이고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 국내 도서관 다문화 서비스 연구의 흐름과 발전 양상을 체계적으로 파악하기 위해 2002년부 터 2025년까지 발표된 한국학술지인용색인(KCI) 등재 논문 409편을 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 각 논문의 초록과 저 자 키워드를 발췌하여 텍스트 마이닝 기법으로 분석하였으며, 연구 시기를 제1기(2002–2010), 제2기(2011–2018), 제3기(2019–2025)로 구분하고, 키워드 동시출현 분석, 토픽모델링(LDA), 마인드맵을 병행하여 시기별 주제와 경 향을 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 제1기에는 다문화 자료 수집과 조직 등 기술적 기반 구축, 사서 교육, 정책 연계 논 의가 나타났으며, 제2기에는 지역 특화 서비스 확산, 정책 기반 운영 전략, 문화자료 보존 및 포용성 확대가 강조 되었다. 제3기에는 인공지능, 챗봇, 메타버스 등 지능형 기술을 활용한 서비스가 본격적으로 논의되었고, 정보복지 와 문화 융합을 지향하는 연구가 활발히 진행되었다. 이러한 변화는 도서관이 단순한 정보 제공 기관을 넘어 사회 통합과 포용을 실현하는 핵심 플랫폼으로 진화하고 있음을 보여준다. 특히 정보복지 강화, 지역 맞춤형 서비스, 지 능형 융합 서비스는 미래 도서관의 핵심 발전 방향으로 제시되었다. 종합적으로 볼 때 국내 도서관 다문화 서비스 연구는 기술적 기반 구축 단계에서 출발하여 운영과 정책의 고도화를 거쳐 지능형 융합 서비스 단계로 발전해 왔 다. 따라서 향후 도서관 정책과 서비스는 이용자 중심성과 지역성을 강화하는 동시에 인공지능 등 첨단 기술을 융 합한 서비스 모델을 구축해야 한다. 이를 통해 공공도서관은 다문화 사회 속에서 포용성과 지속 가능성을 갖춘 선 도적인 사회 기관으로 자리매김할 수 있을 것이다.
