This study explored the life experiences of young adults who, after a period of independent living, return to live with their parents, called returned kangaroos. Specifically, it sought to understand the reasons for their return, the challenges they face, and the types of support and services they need. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with seven returoo young adults, and both within-case and cross-case analyses were performed based on the collected data. The within-case analysis provided contextual and situational insights into each participantʼs experiences as a Returoo young adult, while the cross-case analysis identified themes common across the cases. The study found four major themes: (1) the sweet and bitter taste of independent living, (2) the comfort and discomfort of returning home, (3) overcoming hurdles toward full independence, and (4) the need for practical government policies to support independence. Based on these findings, the study offers several implications for social welfare policy and practice, including the development of family counseling services, independencepreparation education for young adults, comprehensive consultations on individual policy access, improved promotion of young adult policies, clearer and more various youth support criteria, and improving policies that assist both first and repeated transitions to independence.

본 연구는 리터루족 청년의 삶의 경험에 대해 살펴봄으로써 이들이 부모로부터 독립 후 다시 부모와 동거하며 살게 된 이유와 어려움, 필요한 서비스 등을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 리터루족 청년 7명을 대상으로 심층 개별 면접을 실시하였으며 수집된 자료를 바탕으로 사례 내 분석과 사례 간 분석을 수행하였다. 사례 내 분석을 통해 개별 사례자들이 리터루족으로 지내게 되는 사람의 경험에 대한 상황적․맥락적 이해를 도모하였다. 이와 더불어 사례 간 분석을 통해 전체 사례들에 대한 공통적 주제를 도출하여 분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과 총 4개의 주제를 살펴볼 수 있었으며 그 내용은 1) 독립생활의 단맛, 그리고 쓴맛, 2) 다시 돌아온 부모님 집의 편안함과 불편함 사이, 3) 온전한 독립을 위한 허들 넘기, 4) 독립에 도움이 되는 실질적 정책으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 가족상담 서비스, 독립 준비 교육, 개별 정책에 대한 종합 상담 서비스, 청년정책 홍보강화, 청년 지원기준 정리 및 다양화, 청년 독립 및 재독립을 위한 청년정책의 보완 등을 위한 사회복지 함의를 제안하였다.
