This study investigates international case studies of book festivals held as cultural content events centered on books and reading, and analyzes the role played by public libraries in such local festivals. The objective is to identify common roles and distinctive strategies, and to explore strategies and support measures for public library participation in future domestic book festivals. To this end, the study examined the Library Festival of Manchester and the Edinburgh International Book Festival in the United Kingdom, as well as the Kanda Secondhand Book Festival and Book Festa Japan in Japan. Through these case studies, it was confirmed that local festivals not only serve to promote the region but also function as platforms for knowledge sharing. Based on these cases, the following considerations are proposed for planning and operating book festivals in Korea. First, it is essential to collaborate with local communities and organizations from the planning stage, ensuring the festival is co-managed as a collective event. In particular, public libraries focus more on supporting them by offering systematic and professional programming. Second, libraries leverage their status as public institutions to identify and fulfill roles that only they can uniquely perform. This study is meaningful in that it presents reference cases that can inform the development and management of future book festivals in Korea.

본 연구는 책과 독서를 주제로 지역의 문화 콘텐츠를 활용하여 개최되는 국외의 책 축제 사례를 조사하고 지 역축제에서 공공도서관이 어떤 역할을 수행하는지 분석하였다. 이를 통해 사례에서 공통적으로 수행되는 역할과 차별 화된 전략을 파악하여 향후 국내에서 활용할 수 있는 공공도서관의 참여 전략 및 지원 방안에 대해 고민해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 영국의 맨체스터시의 도서관 축제와 에든버러 북 페스티벌, 일본의 간다 헌책 축제와 북페스타 재 팬을 조사하였다. 사례조사를 통해 각 지역축제가 지역 홍보 뿐 아니라 지역사회의 지식 공유 플랫폼의 한 형태로 자 리매김하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 국외 사례를 통해 국내에서 책 축제를 준비하고 운영하기 위한 단계에서 고려 해야 할 점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 책 축제가 지역민들을 아우를 수 있는 행사가 되기 위해서 기획 단계부터 지역민과 단체와 협업하여 공동의 행사로 운영하는 것이 중요하다. 특히, 도서관이 지역축제를 주도하기보다는 전문적이고 체 계적인 프로그램을 운영할 수 있도록 지원하고 후원하는 역할을 고민해야 할 것이다. 둘째, 공적기관인 특징을 반영 하여 도서관만이 할 수 있는 역할을 발굴하고 수행해야 할 것이다. 본 연구는 향후 지역의 책 축제에서 참조할 수 있 는 사례를 발굴하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
