Amid the rapid growth of the digital collectibles market, systematic evidence remains scarce on how scarcity signals and symbolic meanings determine NFT prices. Accordingly, this study uses NBA Topshot transaction data to identify the mechanisms through which these signals shape prices and to quantify the magnitudes of their economic effects. Drawing on more than 95,000 transaction records, we examine in particular the effects of low serial numbers and numbers endowed with symbolic meaning on prices. Regression results show that lower serial numbers trade at significantly higher prices, confirming that the scarcity heuristic operates in digital settings as well. We also find that player popularity moderates this effect: for Common cards, greater popularity attenuates the serial-number effect, whereas for Rare cards it strengthens it. In addition, serial numbers that match a player’s jersey number command a clear premium, providing empirical evidence of the market value of symbolic meaning.

디지털 수집품 시장이 급성장하는 가운데, NFT의 가격이 어떤 희소성 신호와 상징적 의미에 의해 결정 되는지에 대한 체계적 근거는 여전히 부족하다. 이에 본 연구는 NBA Topshot의 거래 데이터를 활용하여 해당 신호들이 가격 형성에 미치는 작동 메커니즘과 경제적 효과의 크기를 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 약 95,000건 이상의 거래기록을 바탕으로, 특히 낮은 일련번호와 상징성이 부여된 번호가 가격에 미치는 효과를 검토하였다. 회귀분석 결과, 일련번호가 낮을수록 유의미하게 높은 가격에 거래되어 디지털 환경에서도 희소성 휴리스틱이 작 동함을 확인하였다. 또한 선수의 인기도는 이 효과를 조절하는데, Common 카드에서는 인기도가 높을수록 일련번 호 효과가 완화되는 반면, Rare 카드에서는 오히려 강화된다. 아울러 선수의 등번호와 일치하는 일련번호는 뚜렷 한 프리미엄을 형성하여 상징성의 시장 가치를 실증적으로 제시함을 확인하였다.
