This study is an empirical qualitative study on the process of experiencing and implementing motherhood in North Korean defector women with children. The research participants were eight North Korean defector women living in Seoul and Gyeonggi who had experience raising children. The research method used phenomenological research methods. The results of the study are as follows. First, the categories of expression of motherhood before migration to North Korea were ‘motherhood experience with my own mother’, ‘children separated from me without even seeing them’, and ‘childrearing is my responsibility’, indicating that motherhood was expressed in a strongly patriarchal society in North Korean society. Second, in the category of survival motherhood in a foreign country, ‘having an unwanted life’, ‘a child whom I want to protect more preciously than my own life’, and ‘responsible motherhood out of concern for my child’, the mother’s appearance of trying to raise a child who was accidentally born in a foreign country responsibly was revealed. Third, in the category of displaying Korean motherhood, ‘a gift from heaven’, ‘adapting to Korea with my child’, ‘determining to become a proud mother’, and ‘a challenge for my recovery and growth’ were revealed. As they adapt to Korean society with their children, women themselves are showing a more proactive appearance in their lives. This study is significant in that it has helped them become interested in the changing lives of North Korean defector women with children by experiencing the process of motherhood and its implementation, and it has also provided basic data for the development of a life well program for North Korean defector women.

본 연구의 목적은 자녀가 있는 북한이탈여성의 모성성을 경험하고 모성성을 구현하는 과정을 파악하고자 하는 연구이다. 연구방법은 현상학적 연구방법을 사용하였으며 연구참여자는 서울, 경기에 거주하고 있는 북한이 탈여성이며 자녀를 양육해 본 경험이 있는 8명을 대상으로 하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 북한에서의 이 주 전 모성의 발현범주에서 ‘친정어머니에게 경험한 모성 경험’, ‘보지도 못하고 이별한 자녀’, ‘자녀양육은 나의 몫’ 으로 나타나 북한사회에서 강한 가부장적 사회 속에서 모성성을 발현하였다. 둘째, 타국에서의 생존적 모성구현 범주에서 ‘원하지 않은 생명을 얻음’, ‘내 생명보다 소중히 지키고 싶은 자녀’, ‘자녀를 향한 걱정에서 책임있는 모 성’으로 타국에서 우연히 가지게 된 자녀를 책임있게 양육하려는 어머니의 모습이 나타났다, 셋째, 한국적 모성성 의 발휘 범주에서 ‘하늘이 주신 선물’, ‘자녀와 함께 한국에 적응해 감’, ‘자랑스런 엄마가 되기로 함’, ‘나의 회복과 성장을 위한 도전’으로 나타났다. 한국사회에 자녀와 함께 적응해가면서 여성자신은 삶에서 보다 주도적인 모습을 나타내고 있다. 본 연구는 자녀가 있는 북한이탈여성의 모성성과 구현과정을 경험함으로써 이들의 변화되는 삶에 관하여 관심을 가지게 되고, 실질적으로 그들이 한국사회에 적응하고 삶의 질이 향상될 수 있도록 하는데 의의가 있으며 북한이탈여성을 위한 모성구현 프로그램개발을 위한 기초자료를 제공하였다.
