The purpose of this study is to present an effective instructional method that enhances middle school students’ musical expression, cognitive development, and self-directed learning by applying Elaboration Theory to music composition classes. As a result of applying Elaboration Theory to composition classes for middle school students, this study found that it contributed to the development of the five key competencies outlined in the 2022 revised music curriculum. Emotional competency was cultivated through sequencing from simple to complex; creativity was fostered through synthesis, cognitive strategy use, and learner autonomy; self-directed learning skills were strengthened through learner control; community competency was enhanced through analogies; and communication skills were developed through both analogy and the sequencing of prerequisite knowledge. These findings suggest that a music composition approach grounded in Elaboration Theory effectively reduces students’ anxiety toward composition and promotes greater freedom and creativity in musical expression.

이 연구는 중학교 학습자의 표현력 향상과 사고력 증진, 자기 주도적 학습 능력을 신장시키기 위하여 음 악 창작 수업을 바탕으로 정교화 이론을 활용하여 음악적 표현 능력과 학습자의 인지 발달에 적합한 교육 방법을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구 결과, 중학교 학습자를 대상으로 정교화 교수 이론을 바탕으로 창작 수업을 한 결 과 2022 개정 음악과 교육과정에 제시되어 있는 5가지 역량을 함양시킬 수 있었다. 단순-복잡의 정교적 계열화를 통해 감성 역량을 기를 수 있으며, 종합자와 인지전략 자극자, 학습자 통제를 통해서 창의성 역량을 함양할 수 있 다. 그리고 학습자 통제를 통해서 자기주도성 역량을 기를 수 있으며, 비유를 통해 공동체 역량을 구현할 수 있다. 또한, 비유와 선수학습요소의 계열화를 통해 소통 역량을 신장시킬 수 있다. 따라서 이 연구를 통해 학생들이 음 악 창작에 대한 부담을 줄이고 자유롭게 음악을 창작하는 데 유용하다는 것을 알 수 있다.
