We examine the evolving role of color in Chinese figure painting by investigating both traditional aesthetic practices and contemporary innovations. While traditional ink techniques conveyed spiritual and cultural depth, they fall short in expressing the complex emotional and sensory dimensions of modern life. We argue that color has emerged as a vital language in articulating mood, psychological depth, and socio-cultural identity in figure painting. Through case studies of modern masters—Tian Liming, He Jiaying, Yuan Wu, and Tang Yongli—we analyze their distinct stylistic applications of color. For instance, Tang Yongli’s Dream of Dunhuang reveals a seamless fusion of historical iconography with modern sensibility. We applied comparative visual analysis to highlight how each artist uses color to navigate the tension between tradition and innovation. Furthermore, we explore how generative AI is reshaping the creative landscape of Chinese figure painting, enabling experimental reinterpretations of color techniques. Our findings suggest that the integration of computational tools not only revitalizes traditional visual grammar but also expands the future potential of culturally rooted digital art.

중국 인물화에서 나타난 색채를 예술적·역사적 역할에 따라 새롭게 조명하고자 하였다. 농경 문명 시대부터 현 대에 이르기까지 인류는 시각적·정신적으로 풍요로운 문화를 창조해왔으나, 전통 수묵화는 현대 사회의 감각적 복합 성과 내면적 정서를 담아내는 데 한계를 드러낸다. 이에 따라 우리는 색채가 현대 인물화에서 분위기, 감정, 정체성을 표현하는 핵심 언어로 부상하고 있음을 밝힌다. 본 연구에서는 전림명, 하가영, 원오, 당용리 등의 대표 작가들을 사 례로 삼아, 색채의 다양한 활용 방식과 그 미학적 의미를 분석하였다. 특히 당용리의 「둔황의 꿈」은 전통적 도상과 현대적 감수성의 융합을 통해 색채의 감각적 소통 능력을 극대화한 사례로 주목된다. 우리는 비교 시각분석 및 양적· 질적 자료 해석을 통해 색채의 표현 전략과 조형적 언어를 구체화하였다. 아울러 본 연구는 컴퓨터 기술의 발전과 생 성형 인공지능(AI)의 접목이 인물화 연구에 가져올 변화 가능성에도 주목한다. 이러한 융합은 전통 색채기법을 현대 문화 맥락에서 재구성할 수 있는 새로운 창작 방향을 제시하며, 디지털 미학과 회화이론의 접점을 확대하는 학문적 기여를 이룬다.
