Assessment of Cable Yarding Feasibility and Accessible Area in Mountainous Forests

This study aims to quantify the proportion of forest area accessible for cable yarding without being obstructed by ridges or other terrain features, relative to the total area theoretically accessible in planar terms. The analysis assumes a lateral yarding distance of 20 meters and a maximum span length of 500 meters, without the use of intermediate supports. All potential cable lines were simulated from points along existing roads. For each simulated line, the area of forest within the lateral yarding distance was calculated. Separately, the total forest area within the maximum span from roads was calculated without accounting for topographic obstructions. The ratio of the area accessible via unobstructed cable yarding to the total theoretically accessible area was then computed. As a case study, an analysis was conducted for a 1,670- hectare basin in Morotsuka Village, located in the southwestern part of Japan. In this area, 1,563 hectares were located within the maximum span from roads, and 1,316 hectares were accessible via cable yarding. This ratio serves as a quantitative measure of the feasibility of cable yarding in mountainous terrain and can be used as a basic indicator for the effective deployment of tower yarders in forest operations planning.
