The purpose this study is to explore in depth the geological field trip experiences of prospective secondary earth science teachers from the perspective of the "novelty space" and to understand its significance. To achieve this, a qualitative case study was conducted, selecting six prospective secondary earth science teachers as participants based on the degree of change in their "novelty space" before and after the geological field trip. Data were primarily collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews, with supplementary materials including pre-excursion guides, field notes, and post-excursion presentation materials. Data analysis followed the case study procedure proposed by Creswell (2012), employing both within-case and cross-case analyses through the matrix analysis method. The within-case analysis revealed that prospective secondary earth science teachers underwent several key processes: experiencing discrepancies between prior concepts and real-world environments, modifying and expanding their conceptual understanding, adapting to the field environment, recognizing the importance of inquiry-based and collaborative learning, and overcoming psychological barriers. Through cross-case analysis, four major themes emerged: ‘classroom theory vs. field observation: concept expansion and reconstruction’, ‘adaptation to outdoor learning environments and enhancement of spatial thinking’, ‘recognition of the importance of inquiry-based and collaborative learning’, and ‘overcoming psychological barriers and changes in learning attitude’. Based on the research findings, this study suggests the need for activities that promote emotional stability and relationship-building in the early stages of the field trip, practical preparatory activities to support understanding of the outdoor environment, and a structured learning sequence—comprising preparation, field trip, and post-trip reflection—that facilitates self-directed inquiry.

본 연구는 예비 중등 지구과학 교사들의 야외 지질 답사 경험을 생소한 경험 공간의 관점에서 심층적으로 탐색하고 그 의미를 이해하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 를 위해 질적 사례연구를 수행하였으며, 지질 답사 전- 후 생소한 경험 공간의 변화 정도를 측정하여 변화 폭 이 큰 예비 중등 지구과학 교사 6명을 연구 참여자로 선정하였다. 자료는 설문지와 심층 인터뷰 결과를 중 심 자료로 수집하였으며, 사전 안내 자료, 필드 노트, 답사 후 발표 자료를 보조 자료로 활용하였다. 자료 분 석은 Creswell(2012)이 제안한 사례 연구 절차에 따라 사례 내 분석과 사례 간 분석을 실시하였으며, 이를 위 해 매트릭스 분석(matrix analysis) 방법을 적용하였다. 사례 내 분석 결과, 예비 중등 지구과학 교사들은 기존 개념과 실제 환경 간의 차이를 경험하며 개념을 수정· 확장하는 과정, 실제 환경에 적응하는 과정, 탐구 학습 과 협력 학습의 중요성을 인식하는 과정, 그리고 심리 적 장벽을 극복하는 과정을 거치는 것으로 나타났다. 사례 간 분석을 통해서는 ‘교실 이론 vs 현장 관찰: 개념 확장과 재구성’, ‘야외 환경에서의 학습 적응력과 공간적 사고 향상’, ‘탐구 학습 및 협력 학습의 중요성 인식’, ‘심리적 장벽 극복과 학습 태도의 변화’라는 네 가지 주제가 도출되었다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로, 답사 초기 단계에서의 정서적 안정과 관계 형성을 위한 활 동, 야외 환경에 대한 사전 이해와 실질적인 대비 활 동, 자기주도적 탐구를 촉진할 수 있도록 준비 단계-야 외답사-정리 단계로 이어지는 단계별 학습 구조가 필 요함을 제언하였다.
