This study aims to explore the child-rearing experiences of Vietnamese marriage migrant women as transnational actors and examine how they construct and reconstruct their lives through this process. A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted with five Vietnamese marriage migrant women as research participants. As a result, 24 key meaning units were derived from 4 categories and organized into 9 major themes. The findings reveal that their child-rearing practices represent a “process of transnational practices from below,” a “struggle for recognition” for themselves and their children in Korean society, and a “path to realizing dreams.” During transnational child-rearing, these women transcend national, linguistic, and cultural boundaries to design a better future for their children. The foundation for this transnational child-rearing includes trust built with Korean family members, a sense of comfort from their home country families, mutual support within self-help groups, and assistance from the Korean government. Despite some challenges, their transnational child-rearing journey is a continuous process of making choices, overcome challenges, and holding onto hope to become “recognized mothers” by their children and society. Based on these findings, this study suggests the need for systematic social services, educational support policies, and improvements in the sociocultural environment and institutional frameworks to support all marriage migrant women engaged in transnational child-rearing and their children.

본 연구는 초국가적 행위자로서 베트남 결혼이주여성의 자녀돌봄 경험은 어떠하며 그 과정에 이들은 어떻게 자신의 삶을 구성-재구성하는지를 탐색하고자 하였다. 이에, 베트남 결혼이주여성 5명을 연구참여자로 현상학적 질적연구를 수행한 결과, 4개 범주 에서 24개 핵심 의미단위를 도출하였고 9개의 대주제로 구분하여 정리하였다. 이들의 자녀돌봄은 ‘아래로부터의 초국가적 실천 과정’이며, 한국사회에서 자신과 자녀를 위한 ‘인정투쟁’ 그리고 ‘꿈의 실현 과정’ 임이 밝혀졌다. 이들은 초국가적 자녀돌봄 중에 국 가적, 언어적 문화적 경계를 넘어 자녀를 위한 더 나은 미래를 설계하고자 하였다. 신 뢰를 쌓은 한국가족, 편안한 모국가족, 상호돌봄의 자조모임, 한국정부의 지원 등은 초 국가적 자녀돌봄의 토대이다. 하지만, 다름을 불인정하는 한국 사회, 교육기관, 가족 내에서 종종 차별과 분리를 경험하며 상처를 받았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이들의 초국 가적 자녀돌봄은 자녀에게 그리고 사회적으로 ‘인정받는 엄마’가 되기 위한 끊임없는 선택과 도전 그리고 희망을 품은 ‘인정투쟁’의 과정이었다. 이를 토대로 초국가적 자녀 돌봄을 행하는 모든 결혼이주여성과 자녀를 위한 체계적인 사회 서비스와 교육지원 정 책 그리고 사회문화적 환경과 제도의 개선을 제언하였다.
