W.B. Yeats, a prominent figure in Irish literature, faced profound grief and existential questions following the death of his friend Robert Gregory, a loss that deeply shaped his reflections on mortality. This paper explores Yeats’s complex sentiments and philosophical beliefs through an examination of his elegies for Robert Gregory—including “In Memory of Major Robert Gregory,” “An Irish Airman Foresees His Death,” and “Shepherd and Goatherd”—and investigates how Yeats’s themes of death and reincarnation are reflected in these poems. By analyzing Gregory’s qualities, this study provides insight into Yeats’s perception of the sublime and the detached, providing a distinctive perspective on mortality. Exploring the elegies for Robert Gregory is essential for a deeper understanding of Yeats’s philosophical insights on life and death.
