Most universities in Korea adopt TOEIC as a major subject or organize it as an auxiliary curriculum to use it as an alternative for students' employment. The reason why universities include TOEIC, which is merely an English certification test, in their major curriculum through affiliated institutions such as the Language Education Center is that the types and evaluation methods of English study between high schools and universities are very different. Universities can objectively evaluate students' English skills based on TOEIC scores, which have long secured high reliability, and provide individualized basic clinic services for students with lower grades. In general, many instructors understand TOEIC grammar as the basis for this test, but have not specified its specific category to be distinguished from vocabulary questions. This paper explores the operation plan of the basic English clinic for improving college students' TOEIC grammar skills, and specifies the definition and scope of basic grammar. To this end, interaction and individualized education as a core goal of system operation are explained through prior research trends and empirical results related to basic English clinics or similar supplementary classes. In the process, the results of the researcher's operation of the basic TOEIC grammar clinic are introduced through mock tests taken before and after. Next, the researcher examines the substance of basic grammar knowledge commonly used in general TOEIC classes. As a result, since the problems that TOEIC Parts 5 and 6 have generally treated as grammar-related items are vocabulary-related to reading comprehension, such as prepositions, conjunctions, parts of speech, and plural forms of nouns, more context-oriented teaching methods should be developed. This study is significant in that it sheds light on the definition and category of basic grammar that fits the perspective of basic clinic learners, unlike the cases in which research has focused on subjective opinions and evaluations of participant students, such as satisfaction with TOEIC education programs and instructors' teaching methods.

한국의 대부분 대학은 토익을 주요 교과목으로 채택하거나, 보조 교과과정으로 편성하여 학 생들의 취업을 위한 대안으로 활용하고 있다. 대학이 언어교육원 등 부설 기관을 통해서 영어인증시험 에 불과한 토익을 주요 교과과정에 포함하는 이유는 고등학교와 대학교 간 영어공부의 유형과 평가방 법이 매우 다르다는 점에서 기인한다. 대학은 오랫동안 높은 신뢰도를 확보한 토익 점수를 기준으로 학 생들의 영어 능력을 객관적으로 평가할 수 있고, 성적이 하위에 있는 학생을 대상으로 개별화된 기초클 리닉 서비스를 제공한다. 일반적으로 많은 교수자가 토익 문법을 이 시험의 기초로 이해하지만, 어휘 문제와 구별할 수 있도록 그것의 구체적인 범주를 특정하지 않은 상태이다. 본 논문은 대학생의 토익 문법 능력향상을 위한 영어 기초클리닉의 운영방안을 탐구하고, 기초문법의 정의와 범위를 구체화한다. 이를 위해서 영어 기초클리닉 또는 유사한 보충 수업과 관련한 선행연구 경향과 실증 결과를 통해 제도 운영의 핵심목표로서 상호작용성과 개별화 교육을 설명한다. 그 과정에서 연구자가 토익 문법 기초클 리닉을 운영한 결과를 사전과 사후에 치른 모의고사를 통해 소개한다. 이어서 일반적인 토익 수업에서 통용되는 기초문법 지식의 실체를 고찰한다. 그 결과, 토익 Part 5와 6에서 일반적으로 문법과 관련한 항목으로 취급해온 문제들이 전치사, 접속사, 품사의 구별, 명사의 복수형 등 사실은 독해력과 관련한 어휘 영역에 해당한 것이므로, 문맥 파악 위주의 교수법을 더 개발하여야 한다. 이 연구는 그동안 토익 교육 프로그램과 강사의 교수법에 대한 만족도 등 참여자 학생들의 주관적인 의견과 평가를 중심으로 연구했던 사례와 다르게 기초클리닉 학습자의 시각에 맞는 기초문법의 정의와 범주를 조명하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
