Korean War Archiving Project And Documenting Localities in University of Hawai?i at M?noa Library

- This article examines the cases of archive development by research institutions for overseas Korean studies from the perspective of documenting the locality and explores development plans. The study investigates the impact of the solidarity between overseas Korean studies institutions and Korea-related communities in the region on the expansion of archives and the practice of locality documentation, using the case of the Korean War Archive Collection at the University of Hawai?i at M?noa Library. For this, it reexamines the implications of locality and locality documentation. In addition, it discusses the methods of Korean studies locality documentation emerging abroad, such as the locality where the two geographical areas of Korea and Hawaii are fused. Since 2023, the University of Hawai?i at M?noa Library has been forming a network with the Korean War Veterans Association Hawaii Chapter 1 (KWVA) to collect and archive materials related to the Korean War. This is a case where the relationship between the archivists and the donor community has been developed to practice documenting the locality regarding Korean studies abroad. It proposes locality documentation as a way to expand archives in overseas Korean studies institutions that inevitably rely on the collection of records and discusses the importance of solidarity with Korea-related local communities. Finally, it shares the role of the record management subject and the implications found through the case.

- 이 논문은 로컬리티 기록의 관점에서 해외 한국학 관련 기관의 아카이브 구축 사례를 살펴보고 발전 방안을 모색하기 위한 것이다. 해외의 한국학 관련 기관과 해당 지역의 한국 관련 공동체의 연대가 아카이브의 확장 및 로컬리티 기록화의 실천에 미치는 영향을 하와이대학교 도서관의 한국 전쟁 아카이브 컬렉션 구축 사례를 통해 살펴본다. 이를 위해 로컬리티와 로컬리티 기록화의 함의를 재검토하고, 한국과 하와이의 두 지리적 영역이 융합된 로컬리티의 경우와 같은 해외에서 발현할 수 있는 한국학 로컬리티 기록화의 방법을 논의하고자 한다. 2023년부터 하와이 대학교 도서관은 한국전쟁참전용사협회 하와이 제1지부(Korean War Veterans Association Hawaii chapter 1, 이하 KWVA)와 네트워크를 형성하며 한국전쟁 관련 자료들을 수집하고 아카이빙을 진행하고 있다. 이는 기록관리주체-기록생산주체가 관계를 발전시키며 해외의 한국학 관련 로컬리티 기록을 실천한 사례이다. 기록물의 수집에 의존할 수밖에 없는 해외 소재 한국학 관련 기관에서 아카이브를 확장할 수 있는 방안으로서 로컬리티 기록화를 제시하고, 이를 위해 한국 관련 지역 공동체와의 연대의 중요성을 논한다. 마지막으로 이를 실천하기 위한 기록관리주체의 역할과 사례를 통해 발견한 시사점을 공유한다.
