This research examines the impact of an IP-based geolocation disclosure, initiated across Chinese social networking sites in 2022, on user comments and engagement. By analyzing data from Sina Weibo, the initial platform to adopt this policy, we focus on the changes in the sentiment and length of comments, the frequency of comments, and reposts. Our findings indicate that the policy enhances the positivity within comments while curtailing their length and diminishing user interaction overall. Moreover, the observed changes are more distinct for comments linked to institutional accounts as opposed to those from general influencer accounts.
