Older adults have been considered as a digitally vulnerable group in most studies on their smartphone usage experience, but their capability of using the smartphone may vary from person to person. Therefore, it was examined how the differences in both smartphone usage experience and needs appear according to the capabilities in this study. For the purpose of this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight members of a senior welfare center located in Seoul and aged from 71 to 90 years. As a result of thematic analyses of the interview contents, three themes and twelve categories were derived. The first theme was ‘barriers to utilizing the smartphone’, and older adults who began to use smartphones at a later age had difficulties in using them due to physical aging and lack of support from people close to them. The second theme was ‘process of utilizing the smartphone’, and older adults with low smartphone literacy were using only limited functions of the smartphones whereas those with high literacy were enjoying social relationships and hobbies through a variety of smartphone functions. The third theme was ‘needs for utilizing the smartphone’, and older adults with low literacy had high needs for seeking social interactions and new information whereas those with high literacy showed needs of adapting to the change in the digital society by utilizing smartphones like younger generations. It was confirmed that the usage experience and needs as well as the process of adapting to the smartphone of the older adults were different according to the level of smartphone literacy in this study. Based on the findings, the necessity of organizing or providing educational programs considering the characteristics of the elderly was suggested.

노인은 스마트폰 사용경험에 관한 대다수의 연구에서 디지털 취약계층으로 다루어지고 있지만, 노인 마다 스마트폰 활용역량은 다를 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 그 역량에 따른 스마트폰 사용 관련 경험과 욕구의 차이가 어떻게 나타나는지 살펴보고자 했다. 이를 위하여 서울 소재 노인복지관을 이 용하고 있는 만 71세부터 90세 사이의 노인 8명을 대상으로 스마트폰 사용경험에 대한 심층 인터뷰 를 진행하였다. 인터뷰 내용을 주제 분석 방법으로 분석한 결과, 3개의 주제와 12개의 범주가 도출되 었다. 첫 번째 주제는 ‘스마트폰 사용 장벽’이었는데, 스마트폰을 늦은 나이에 접한 노인들은 신체 노화와 주변의 지지 부족 등으로 스마트폰 사용에 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 두 번째 주제는 ‘스마트폰 사용과정’이었는데, 스마트폰 활용역량이 낮은 노인은 스마트폰의 한정된 기능만을 사용하고 있었던 반면 높은 노인은 스마트폰의 다양한 기능을 활용하여 사회적 관계 맺기나 취미생활을 즐기고 있었 다. 세 번째 주제는 ‘스마트폰 활용 욕구’인데, 활용역량이 낮은 노인은 사회적 교류나 새로운 정보 추구의 욕구가 컸던 반면 높은 노인은 스마트폰을 젊은 세대처럼 활용하면서 디지털 사회의 변화에 적응하고자 하는 욕구를 보였다. 본 연구에서는 스마트폰 사용역량에 따라 노인의 스마트폰 사용경 험과 욕구, 그리고 스마트폰에 대한 적응과정이 다른 것을 확인하였다. 이에 따라서 노인 개개인의 특성을 고려한 교육 프로그램 구성이나 제공의 필요함을 제안하였다.
