This study aims to find the appropriate direction of practice for educational missions in other cultures to Korean missionaries by critically analyzing Alexander Duff's major mission works, that had great influence on the Protestant educational mission works. Before Duff’s works, Indian educational missions were mostly confined to rudimentary ones such as Christian schools for the lower classes of the region. Duff provided Englishmediated Western education based on Christian ideology for the upper and middle classes of India with educational expertise. In particular, he founded the General Assembly's Institution of the Scottish Church in Calcutta, which later became an important model for Protestant higher education institutions. There are several major characteristics of Duff's educational mission: firstly, the insights on the importance of educational mission shown by Duff and the Scottish Indian Mission was far ahead of that of British missionaries at the time. Secondly, Duff focused only on school ministry, which was very rare at the time, unlike other missionaries in the early 19th century who worked together in various ministries. Thirdly, Duff actively responded to the need for education in the middle and upper classes of Calcutta, by injecting Western education through English in the mid-19th century. Fourthly, Duff's schools adopted a learning method based on questioning and understanding, unlike most missionary schools and Indian public schools at the time that adopted learning by memorization. Fifthly, Duff recognized the importance of teachers, and conducted the first systematic teacher-training program in Calcutta at the time. This became the beginning of the teacher-university, which was later established by missionaries. Sixthly, Duff's influence on the education of Indian national leaders(Ram Mohan Roy, Brahmin students) and other Western missionaries (John Wilson, John Andson, etc.) was immense. Seventhly, Duff's educational mission had a great influence on Indian public education especially through Macaulay's Educational Minutes and Wood's Despatch. These characteristics suggest that Duff's educational mission methods will help Korean churches’ cross-cultural mission works in many ways such as: setting up a Christian mission school in a creative approach areas, setting up mission plans suitable for the needs of the local community, dispatching missionaries specializing in education, developing local educational resources, and teacher training. This will help find ways to link public education with mission work that contribute to the development of local communities.

본 연구는 개신교 교육 선교계에 큰 영향을 끼친 알렉산더 더프 (Alexander Duff)의 교육 선교 사역을 비평적으로 연구함으로써 한국 타 문화권 교육 선교의 바른 실천 방향을 모색하는 데 있다. 더프 이전까지 인 도 교육 선교가 주로 지역의 하층민들을 대상으로 초보적 수준의 기독교 학 교에 머물렀다면 더프는 교육의 전문성에 바탕을 둔 인도의 중상층을 대 상으로 영어 매개의 서구적 일반 교육과 기독교 교육을 함께 제공했다는 점이다. 특별히 그가 설립한 캘커타의 스코틀랜드 교회의 ‘총회 학교’(the General Assembly’s Institution)는 이후 개신교 고등 교육 기관의 중요한 모델이 된다. 더프의 교육 선교의 주요 특징은 첫째, 더프와 스코틀랜드 인 도 선교회가 보여준 교육 선교의 중요성에 대한 인식이 당시 영국 선교회들 보다 훨씬 더 앞서 있다는 점이다. 둘째, 더프는 19세기 초반 다른 선교사들 이 다양한 사역을 함께 병행한 것과는 달리 당시로선 아주 흔치 않게 학교 사역에만 전문적으로 집중하였다. 셋째, 더프는 19세기 중반 캘커타의 중상 류층의 교육, 즉 영어를 매개로 한 서구 교육의 필요에 대해 적극적으로 대 응하였다. 넷째, 더프의 학교는 당시 선교사 학교들과 인도 공립학교들이 암기식 교육을 채택했던 것과 달리 이해와 질문에 바탕은 둔 교육 방법을 채택하였다. 다섯째, 더프는 교사들의 중요성을 인식하여 당시로는 캘커타 에서는 처음으로 체계적인 교사 훈련 프로그램을 실시하였는데 이는 나중 에 선교사들이 세울 교원 대학의 효시가 되었다. 여섯째, 더프가 현지인들 (람 모한 로이, 브라민 학생들)과 다른 서구 선교사들의 교육(존 윌슨, 존 앤 드슨 등)에 끼친 영향이다. 일곱째, 더프의 교육 선교는 인도의 공교육, 특 히 맥컬레이(Macaulay)의 교육 회의록(Educational Minutes), 우드의 급송 문서(Wood’s Despatch) 등의 수립에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 더프의 교육 선교는 오늘날 한국 타문화권 교육 선교가 창의적 접근 지역에서 기독교 세계관 에 바탕을 둔 교육 이념, 지역사회의 필요에 맞는 선교방안, 교육 전문 선교 사 파송, 현지의 교육 자원 개발과 교사 훈련, 공교육과의 연계와 지역사회 발전에 이바지하는 선교의 방안들을 모색하도록 돕는다
