The increasing depletion of oil resources and the environmental problems caused by the use of fossil energy in the rapid development of society. The bio-oil became s a promising alternative energy source to fossil. However, bio-oil cannot be directly utilized, owing to a low calorific value and poor thermal stability because of a high proportion of oxygenated compounds. Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the more important refining methods for refining phenolic compounds in bio-oil to liquid fuels such as alkanes and is an important process in the conversion of petroleum, coal-based liquid fuels, and biomass oils, in which catalysts play a vital role. The catalysts play a vital role in hydrodeoxygenation reactions. This paper reviews the catalysts used in bio-oil HDO, which were mainly divided into precious metal catalysts, non-precious metal catalysts, porous organic polymer catalysts, polar solvents, etc. The advantages and disadvantages of the different types of catalysts are summarized, and the mechanism of the catalysts in the bio-oil HDO process is briefly described. The future development trend of the industry is considered.
