Effect of alkali-peroxide treatment on characteristics of lignocellulose nanofibril

The lignocellulose has a recalcitrant characteristics that makes it difficult to defibrillation because of its heterogeneous and complex structure. Therefore, the pretreatment is essential to improve for the efficiency of mechanical defibrillation for cellulose nanofibril (CNF) production. Various chemical and biological pretreatment methods have been investigated. Alkali-peroxide treatment has an excellent delignification effect and an environmental benefits due to its low toxicity. In this study, the content of lignin and hemicellulose of Liriodendron tulipifera L. was adjusted by alkali-peroxide treatment with different concentration of hydrogen peroxide. After that, the lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) were prepared by wet disk-milling. As the concentration of hydrogen peroxide was increased, the content of lignin and hemicellulose was decreased, resulting in improving efficiency of defibrillation. With decreasing content of lignin and hemicellulose, the average diameter of LCNF was decreased, and the filtration time of the LCNF suspensions was increased.
