This study examines the concept and status of ‘undeclared major’ as an autonomous major selection system, which has recently become a hot topic in college education, and discusses concerns and methods based on this. Undeclared maior is a system that removes restrictions and strengthens autonomy in allowing students who have been unable to properly explore and choose a career path due to college entrance exams to select a major that suits them after sufficient major exploration. This study reflects these recent issues and examines the main contents, the operational current status, and future plans along with previous research on undeclared majors (or free majors) system starting from March and April 2024. In addition, ahead of the full-scale implementation of undeclared major system, practical matters regarding the implementation of this system were discussed in detail. Based on this study, as a system that helps students decide on their major and career path through sufficient exploration with autonomy, we will be able to find realistic ways to establish and develop the undeclared major system and conduct in-depth discussions.

본 연구는 최근 대학교육에서 많은 화제가 되고 있는 자율전공선택제로서 ‘무전공’ 제도의 개념과 현황을 살펴보고 이를 토대로 우려와 대책을 논의하고자 한다. 무전공 제는 대학 입시로 인해 진로의 탐색과 선택을 제대로 못한 학생들이 충분한 전공 탐색 을 거쳐 자신에게 맞는 전공을 선택해 나가도록 하는 데 있어 제약을 없애고 자율성을 강화한 제도이다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 최근의 쟁점을 반영하여 2024년 3, 4월을 기점으로 무전공(또는 자유전공) 관련 선행 연구와 함께 무전공 제도의 주요 내용, 무 전공 선발 운영 현황 및 향후 계획을 살펴보았다. 더불어, 무전공제의 본격적인 시행을 앞두고 이 제도의 실행에 관한 현실적인 사항들을 세부적으로 논의하였다. 본 연구를 토대로 학생들이 자율성을 가지고 충분한 탐색을 거쳐 전공과 진로를 결정해 나가도록 돕는 제도로서 무전공제의 현실적인 안착과 발전 방안을 모색하고 심도 깊은 논의를 진행해 나갈 수 있을 것이다.
