In 1877, John Ross wrote the first Korean language textbook, 『Corean Primer』. This is of great significance in that it is the first textbook for Korean as a Foreign Language(KFL). In the existing research related to 『Corean Primer』, there was an opinion that the historical records were used in Hamgyeong-do dialect and Pyeongbuk dialect, but in this study, it was revealed that the dialect used in the textbook was the Pyeong-an dialect by combining the perspectives of North Korean defectors and other historical sources. Meanwhile, in 『Corean Primer』, spacing and horizontal writing were applied and described for the first time. This can be seen as providing a new opportunity for foreigners to easily access grammatically when learning Korean, away from the perspective that was centered on modern vertical writing and horizontal writing. Considering that John Ross was the first to write Korean language textbooks to teach foreign learners, his contribution to the history of Korean language textbooks should be appreciated.

존 로스는 1877년 최초의 한국어 교재인 『조선어 첫걸음』을 집필하였다. 이는 외국어로서의 한국어 교육에 첫 번째 교재라는 점에 커다란 의의가 있다. 기존 『조선어 첫걸음』와 관련한 연구에서는 해당 사료가 함경도 방언과 평북방언으로 쓰였다는 의견이 있었으나, 본 연구에서는 탈북민들의 관점과 기타 사료를 종합하여 교재에 서 사용된 방언은 평안방언임을 밝히었다. 한편 『조선어 첫걸음』에서는 띄어쓰기와 좌횡서(左橫書) 가로쓰기를 최초로 적용하여 기술하였다. 이는 근대 우종서(右縱書) 세로쓰기로 이루어진 기술 방식에서 탈피하여, 외국인들 이 한국어를 배울 때 용이하게 접근이 가능한 새로운 방안을 제안하였음을 알 수 있다. 존 로스가 최초로 외국인 학습자들을 위한 한국어 교재를 집필하였다는 점을 고려한다면, 한국어 교재사에서 그의 공로는 높게 평가받아야 한다.
