From the 3rd Revolution (Digital Information Industry Revolution) to the 4th Industrial Revolution, the development of digital devices and virtual reality technologies has led to ontological, structural, and cultural changes in individuals and society. Technology provides a framework for awareness of oneself and the world. The expansion of virtual reality raises the need to lay the foundation for a philosophical understanding of human existence. In this regard, this paper aims to examine how the development of virtual reality technology has caused changes in human existence and perception of it, and based on this, to enhance the concept of self-identity that coexists with real and virtual reality. To this end, the current state of technology related to virtual reality and the concept of self-identity were summarized and changes in perceptions of self-characteristics and self-identity in virtual reality were examined. As a result, the self in virtual reality is not a single and stable concept based on the body because it exists outside the physical space-time constraints of the real world and exhibits the following characteristics. First, it can be seen that it forms a 'reconstructed' self based on big data in digital virtual reality, constitutes a 'mediated' self, and secondly, it can be seen that it forms a 'reconstructed' self based on big data. The significance of this study is that it is an attempt to pay attention to changes in modern people's self-identity and raise questions about existence in an era when reality and virtuality are gradually narrowing the gap. However, there are limitations to research at the following points. With technology so far, it is still difficult for humans, users, to completely escape from physical conditions, and it is not possible to distinguish between reality and virtual self-identity based on the use of technology. Nevertheless, follow-up studies are needed to understand the self and establish a new concept in virtual reality that develops as the technology becomes more sophisticated.

3차 혁명(디지털 정보산업 혁명)부터 4차 산업 혁명에 이르기까지 디지털 기기와 가상현실 기술의 발전 은 개인과 사회에 존재론적, 구조적, 문화적 변화를 초래하였다. 기술은 자신과 세상에 대한 인식의 틀을 제공한 다. 가상현실의 확장은 인간 실존에 관한 철학적 이해 기반을 마련할 필요성을 야기한다. 본고는 가상현실기술의 발전이 인간 존재와 그에 대한 인식에 어떤 변화를 야기하였는지 살펴보고 이를 바탕으로 실제현실과 가상현실에 공존하는 자아정체성 개념을 제고하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 가상현실과 관련한 기술 현황과 자아정체성의 개념을 정리하고 가상현실에서 자아특성과 자아정체성에 대한 인식 변화를 살펴보았다. 결과적으로, 가상현실에서의 자아 는 실재 세계의 물리적 시공간 제약에서 벗어나 존재하기 때문에 신체에 근거한 단일하고도 안정적인 개념이 아 니며 다음과 같은 특징을 보인다. 첫째, ‘매개되어’, 복수의 자아를 구성하고 둘째, 디지털가상현실에서는 빅데이터 기반의 ‘재구성된’ 자아를 형성한다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구의 의의는 실재와 가상이 점차 간극을 좁혀가는 시대에 현대인의 자아정체성에 대한 변화에 주목하고 존재에 대한 문제를 제기한 시도라는 점에 연구의 함의가 있다. 그 러나 다음의 지점에서 연구의 한계가 있다고 하겠다. 현재까지의 기술로는 사용자인 인간이 여전히 물리적 조건으 로부터 완전히 벗어나기 힘들며, 기술의 사용 유무를 기준으로 실재와 가상 자아정체성 둘 사이를 구분할 수는 없 다는 점이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 기술이 더욱 정교해짐에 따라 발전하는 가상현실에서 자아에 대한 이해와 새로 운 개념 정립을 위해서는 후속 연구가 필요하다.
