This paper examines the contemporary applicability of Pierre Bourdieu’s analysis of photography, focusing on his work "Photography: A MiddleBrow Art." Bourdieu’s analysis of photography provides valuable insights into the social and aesthetic dimensions of the middle, particularly about class distinctions and the social function of photography. However, in light of technological advancements and the evolving role of photography in the art world, there are limitations to Bourdieu’s analysis. This paper explores the transformation of photography and its accessibility across social classes, challenging some of Bourdieu’s premises. It also discusses the potential for extending Bourdieu’s theory to encompass new perspectives, such as the intersectionality of identities and the impact of web platforms and social media on the utilization of photographs. By critically engaging with Bourdieu’s analysis and integrating other perspectives, this paper seeks to offer a comprehensive understanding of the contemporary dynamics of photography and its relationship to class divisions and social interactions.

본 논문은 피에르 부르디외(Pierre Bourdieu)의 사진 분석의 현대적 적용에 관하여 중간 예술을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 부르디외의 사진 분석은 매체의 사회적 차원과 미적 차원, 특히 사진의 사회적 기능과 계급 구 분에 대한 통찰력을 제공한다. 그러나 기술의 발전과 예술계에서 사진의 역할이 넓어진다는 필자의 분석 결 과 부르디외의 것은 한계와 가능성을 동시에 내포하고 있다. 본고는 부르디외의 연구를 통하여 중간 예술로 서의 사진을 연구한다. 계급과 정체성의 교차, 그리고 현대적으로 볼 때 웹 플랫폼과 소셜 미디어 등 사진 활동이 지니는 의의에 관하여 새로운 관점을 부여하도록 시도하였다. 이러한 시도들이 부르디외의 연구가 한 계를 지녀도 발전시킬 가능성으로 작동할 것이다. 이러한 연구는 계급 연구의 한계이며 동시에 계급 연구가 그 바깥의 영역 역시 담지해야 된다는 결론에 달한다.
