Although 10% of approximately 1,100 global unicorn companies were hardwareunicorns in 2022, any hardware unicorn had not existed in Korea until 2022. Toanalyze the problem, this study investigates the factors influencing scale-up ofhardware unicorns. Especially, it focuses on comparing the cases of globalunicorns and Korean pre-unicorns in the fields of AI semiconductors andautonomous delivery robots. According to case study results, case firms havesimilarity in operating in fast-growing new industries based on B2B businessmodel, top-level technologies, and founders with R&D job experience. However,the period from R&D to scale-up is longer in the Korean case firms than in theforeign case firms. This is because of a lack of collaboration with large buyers inprototype test process, and persistent large-scale investment by corporate venturecapitals (CVCs) of buyers and/or complementary firms and specialized VCs forhigh-tech startups in the Korean case firms. In addition, a close connectionbetween policies for emerging technologies and new industries and those forhigh-technology startups in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, and supports throughpublic financing for hardware-based startups were relatively less sufficient in theKorean case firms.

2022년에 전 세계 1,100여 개의 유니콘 중 약 10%가 하드웨어 유니콘이었지만, 2022년까지 국내에서 하드웨어 유니콘이 없었다. 이 문제를 분석하고자 본 연구는 하드웨어 유니콘의 스케일업에 영향을 주는 요인들을 살펴보았다. 특히, 본 연구는 AI반도체와 자율주행물류로봇 분야의 해외 하드웨어 유니콘과 국내 하드웨어 예비유니콘의 사례를 비교 분석했다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 국내·외 사례 기업은 빠르게 성장하는 신산업 내 B2B 사업모형, 글로벌 상위권의 기술력, 연구개발자 출신 CEO의 유사점이 있다. 하지만 국내 사례 기업은 동일 업종의 해외 사례 기업보다 연구개발 후 스케일업까지 더 오래 걸렸다. 이는 해외 기업에 비해 국내 기업에서 수요 대기업과의 실증 협력, 초·중기 투자유치단계에서 기업형 벤처캐피털(CVC)과 첨단기술 스타트업 투자에 특화된 벤처캐피털(VC)의 지속적 대형 투자가 미흡했기 때문이다. 또한 정부의 신기술 및 신산업 육성과 첨단기술창업 간 생태계 관점에서 연계, 하드웨어 스타트업에 대한 정책금융 지원도 국내 사례 기업에서 충분하지 못했다.
