This study analyzed four Korean textbooks widely used in the field of Korean language education to understand the current status of character education of foreign students. I looked at the distribution patterns of “sincerity, courage, moderation, wisdom, consideration, etiquette, justice, respect, compliance, responsibility, cooperation, and filial piety,” which are universally recognized in character education, in Korean textbooks. In order to secure the reliability of this study, character virtues were finally classified through a review process of three Korean language teachers. As a result of the analysis, these character virtues were evenly arranged in Korean textbooks, and the weight was contained in “wisdom” and “consideration.” Currently, character education emphasizes “consideration” with the aim of cultivating a sense of community, and the high proportion of “consideration” in Korean textbooks seems to be following the flow of character education. If character education for foreign students begins in earnest, it will be necessary to closely examine what character education is required from the perspective of foreign students.

본 연구는 외국인 유학생의 인성교육 현황 파악을 하고자 한국어 교육 현장에서 널 리 사용되고 있는 한국어 교재 4종을 분석하였다. 인성교육에서 보편적으로 인정되는 인성 덕목인 ‘성실, 용기, 절제, 지혜, 배려, 예절, 정의, 존중, 준법, 책임, 협동, 효도’가 한국어 교재에 나타나는 분포양상을 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 신뢰성을 확보하기 위해 한국어 교원 3인의 검토 과정을 거쳐 인성덕목을 최종 분류하였다. 분석 결과, 이들 인 성 덕목이 한국어 교재에 고루 배치되어 있었는데, ‘지혜’와 ‘배려’에 비중이 실려 있었 다. 현재 인성교육에서 공동체 의식 함양을 목표로 ‘배려’를 강조하고 있는데, 한국어 교재에 ‘배려’의 비중이 높다는 것은 한국어 교육이 인성 교육의 흐름을 따르고 있는 것 으로 보여졌다. 외국인 유학생 대상 인성교육이 본격화된다면 외국인 유학생의 입장에 서 요구되는 인성교육이 무엇인지 면밀히 검토되어야 할 것이다.
