With the expansion of human and material exchanges and the spread of the Korean Wave, the relationship between Vietnam and South Korea has never been closer. However, the level of mutual understanding between the two countries has not yet reached a high level. This is due to a lack of understanding of cultural differences and a lack of mutual respect between the two countries. It is essential to find a way to overcome the negative phenomenon to improve bilateral relations. This article seeks to find clues for improving bilateral relations by examining the relationship between Korea and Vietnam, especially the exchange patterns from the pre-modern period, when the homogeneity of the common civilization was strong, to the early modern period, when the East Asian civilization was on the verge of breaking up in the Middle Ages. The results show that Korea and Vietnam have built a long-standing relationship based on mutual respect, which is based on a symbiosis pursued under the keywords of curiosity, respect, cooperation, and win-win, based on the homogeneity of their geographical and relational locations. We also found that the two countries have maintained a two-way street of exchanges in culture, ideas, and even movements for national independence, rather than a one-way street. The exchanges between Korea and Vietnam were not state-organized or government-led. Rather, it was based on people-to-people exchanges at the private level. Therefore, even in the past when there were no official diplomatic relations between the two countries, various individuals were able to promote cooperation and mutual benefit based on an attitude of mutual respect in the other country or a third country. These characteristics derived from the history of Korea-Vietnam exchanges should be referenced to promote exchanges between the two countries in the future. It is time for bilateral exchanges in the true sense of the word.

현재 한국과 베트남의 관계는 인적·물적 교류의 확대, 그리고 한류의 확산으로 인해 그 어느 때보다 밀접해졌다. 그러나 양국 간 상호 이해 정도는 아직 높은 수준에 이르 지 못한 것으로 보인다. 문화 차이에 대한 이해 부족 및 상호 존중의 태도 결여로 인한 양국 간 부정적 기운이 뚜렷하게 존재하기 때문이다. 양국 관계 개선을 위해서는 부정 적 현상을 타개할 방향성 모색이 필수적이다. 이에 본고에서는 한국과 베트남이 축적 해온 관계사, 그중에서도 공동문명권의 동질성이 짙었던 전근대 시기부터 동문세계 결 별의 기로에 섰던 근대초기까지의 교류 양상을 살펴봄으로써 양국 관계 개선의 실마리 를 찾고자 하였다. 그 결과 한국과 베트남은 상호 존중을 바탕으로 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 관계를 쌓아왔음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 지리적·관계적 위치의 동질감을 토대로 호기심, 존중, 협력, 상생이라는 키워드 아래 추구한 공생을 바탕으로 하고 있었음을 알 수 있었 다. 또한 두 나라는 문화, 사상, 심지어 민족독립을 위한 운동에 있어서도 일방향이 아 닌 상호 교환 관계에 있는 쌍방통행식 교류를 지속하였음을 확인하였다. 한국과 베트 남의 교류는 국가나 정부 주도가 아닌 민간 차원에서 개인 간 맺은 인적 교류를 토대로 한 것이었다. 이에 두 나라 사이에 공식 수교가 이루어지지 않은 시기에도 한국인과 베 트남인은 상대국 혹은 제3국에서 상호 존중의 태도를 바탕으로 협력·상생을 도모할 수 있었다. 한·베 교류사에서 도출한 이러한 특징들은 앞으로 두 나라 사이의 교류 증진을 위해 참조될 필요가 있다. 진정한 의미에서의 쌍방 교류가 절실한 시점이다.
