Gyeongbuk region has been a representative industry cluster in S. Korea. It is not sure, however, if it is possible to get sustainable growth; growing number of large firms have moved their manufacturing facilities to other area or abroad since the mid 2000’s. Recently and globally, Smart Specialization has been grown as a dominant strategy framework for fostering industry and business ecosystem approach is regarded as an effective way to understand the way firms and other innovation agents coevolve. The case study on two firms in electronics and cosmetics industry shows that smart specialization and the sumiwake business ecosystem approach can be an effective strategy for sustainable regional industry cluster of Gyeongbuk region

경상북도는 제조업의 특화정도가 대단히 높고 산업단지 클러스터가 잘 발달되어 있는 지역이지만 점점 대 기업들의 생산기지 해외이전, 역외유출이 가속화되면서 지역경제가 어려움을 겪고 있다. 따라서 지역의 혁신 클러스터가 지속가능한 성장을 위한 전략을 찾는 것은 매우 중요하다. 최근 지역산업육성 전략 프레임워크로 서 스마트전문화 논의가 세계적으로 부상하고 있으며, 기업생태계 중심의 접근이 필요하다는 공감대를 가지 고 있다. 이에 경북지역의 전자부품산업과 화장품제조업 분야의 기업사례에 대한 분석을 통하여 스마트전문 화, 기업생태계적 전략이 어떻게 지속가능한 지역의 혁신클러스터 성장전략으로 활용될 수 있는지 가능성을 탐색하였다.
