In this study, the perception of Korea was examined through the analysis of Korea-related contents in secondary school social studies textbooks of five Southeast Asian countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Indonesia. The analysis results are as follows. First, all five countries in Southeast Asia provide basic geographic information about Korea. Second, textbooks of Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Indonesia, unlike Vietnamese textbooks, positively recognize Korea’s economic development and cultural globalization. Third, there are some differences in these countries’ perceptions of Korea. While Vietnam recognizes Korea only as an emerging industrial country, Thailand reflects deep interest in Korea’s political, cultural fields and the latest information. Cambodia, Laos, and Indonesia also focus on economic development and cooperation with Korea. Fourth, textbooks of Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Indonesia carefully deal with the division of the Korean Peninsula, different political and economic systems, and economic development after World War II.

본 연구는 동남아시아 5개국의 중등학교 사회과 관련 교과서 내 한국 관련 내용분석을 통해 한 국에 대한 인식을 고찰하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동남아시아 5개국 모두 한국에 관한 기 본적인 지리정보를 제공하고 있다. 둘째, 베트남을 제외한 캄보디아, 태국, 라오스, 인도네시아 교과 서에서는 한국의 경제발전과 문화세계화 등에 대해 긍정적으로 인식하고 있다. 셋째, 한국에 대한 인 식에는 차이가 있다. 베트남이 한국을 단지 신흥공업국으로만 인식하고 있다면 태국은 한국의 정치, 문화 등에 대한 깊은 관심과 최신 정보를 반영하고 있다. 또한 캄보디아, 라오스, 인도네시아는 한국 과의 경제발전과 협력에 비중을 두고 있다. 넷째, 캄보디아, 태국, 라오스, 인도네시아는 제2차 세계대 전 이후 한반도의 분단과 서로 다른 정치⋅경제체제 및 경제발전에 대해 주의 깊게 다루고 있다.
