This paper estimates the effect of tuition fees on college persistence, graduation, and the time taken to graduate based on student panel data from a large Korean university from 2011 to 2021. We find that an increase in one million Korean won of tuition fees is associated with a decrease in 0.2~0.3 percentage points of the probability of college persistence and with a decrease in 0.4~1.5 percentage points of the probability of college graduation, and with a increase in 1.05 weeks of the time taken to graduate. The negative effect of tuition fees are greater for students with lower aid-to-tuition ratio. Academic probation decreases the probability of college persistence by 2.2 percentage points reduces the probability of college graduation by 17 percentage points. increases the non-completion rate by 2.6 percentage points and an one-point rise in extracurricular activities index reduces the rate by 0.1 percentage points. Student financial aid programs that reduce tuition costs and tutoring programs for students with probation may contribute to higher college persistence and graduation.

본 논문은 국내 한 일반대학교 재학생의 2011~2021학년도 학기별 패널자료를 토대로 직전학기 등록금 실납부액이 학업지속 및 졸업 확률과 졸업소요시간에 미치는 영향을 추정한다. 추정 결과에 따르면 직전학기 등록금 실납부액이 1백만 원 증가 시 학업지속 확률은 약 0.2~0.3%p, 졸업 확률은 약 0.4~1.5%p 감소하고 졸업소요시간은 약 1.05주 증가한다. 그리고 직전학기 실납부액이 학업지속 확률 및 졸업 확률에 미치는 부정적 영향은 등록금 충당률이 50% 이하인 학생이 그렇지 않은 학생보다 더 크게 나타난다. 한편, 등록금 실납부액의 부정적 영향보다 직전학기 학사경고 경험의 부정적 영향이 10배 가까이 더 큰 것으로 추정되었다. 학생 1인당 장학금 증대 방안 및 학사경고 경험을 줄이기 위한 교과활동 지원 방안 등이 대학생의 학업지속 확률과 졸업률을 높이는 효과적인 방안이 될 수 있을 것이다.
