This study emphasized the necessity of history and culture in Korean language education for foreign learners and discussed the educational value in detail, focusing on the 5·18 Democratization Movement, which must be learned to understand the Korean democratization process. Above all, 5·18 Democratization Movement must be learned in the category of historical culture in that it is a content that can deeply understand Korean culture, including Korean history, politics, economy, and even ideological culture. Foreign learners who mainly learn history and political culture have many learners for academic purposes above the advanced level. Accordingly, in consideration of the learner's characteristics, four cultural-oriented textbooks developed for learners for academic purposes were selected and the aspects of the 5·18 Democratization Movement included in the textbook were analyzed. Based on this, problems in the narrative method were derived. In order to effectively learn the history and political culture of the democratization process for foreign learners, a specific educational direction was proposed in terms of the composition of learning contents and diversification of learning materials as an improvement direction. In order to effectively teach the 5·18 Democratization Movement, it is necessary to supplement the content aspects in detail and organize them in the direction of utilizing various learning materials.

이 연구는 학문목적 학습자 대상의 한국어교육에서 역사 문화의 필요성을 역설하고, 한국의 민주화 과정을 이해하는 데 매우 중요한 5·18민주화운동을 중심으로 교육적 가 치를 상세히 논하였다. 5·18민주화운동은 학습자의 관심이 높을 뿐만 아니라 한국의 역 사와 정치, 경제, 나아가 관념 문화까지 한국문화를 깊이 있게 탐구할 수 있다는 점에서 매우 유용하다. 이제까지 한국어교육에서 역사와 정치 문화는 주로 고급 수준 이상의 학문목적 학습자를 대상으로 이루어져 왔는데 효과적인 역사 교육을 위해서는 이들의 특성을 고려한 교육 내용과 자료가 마련되어야 한다. 이에 학문목적 학습자를 위해 개 발된 문화 중심의 교재 4권을 선정하여 5·18민주화운동의 수록 양상을 분석하여 문제 점을 도출하였다. 이를 토대로 한국의 민주화 과정에 대한 역사와 정치 문화를 효과적 으로 가르치기 위해 학습 목표 설정, 학습 내용 구성, 학습 활동 및 자료 구성, 다양한 매체 활용, 지역 문화 자원의 활용 측면에서 구체적인 교육 방향을 제안하였다.
