This Study is designed to introduce the old Hangul manuscript Sire.L.13 kept in the Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana and to elucidate its significance. This manuscript is identified as a Korean translation of Ineffabilis Deus, an apostolic constitution promulgated by Pope Pius IX in 1854, which defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This study, as the first scholarly work on this manuscript, corroborates the significance of Sire.L.13 as follows. First, Marie-Dominique Sire, the principal of the Saint Sulpice Seminary in Paris, carried out the project to translate Ineffabilis Deus into “living” languages around the world and to dedicate these translations to Pope Pius IX. This old Hangul manuscript came to be one result of this worldwide translation project. Second, the letter of Sire requesting a Korean translation arrived in Choseon in February, 1863, but the Latin text of Ineffabilis Deus did not come until the end of June. Bishop Daveluy took charge of translation from the Latin text into Korean, and Korean believers transcribed the Korean text and decorated it with beautiful flower designs. All these works of translation, transcription, and decoration were completed before September 8. Bishop Berneux, Apostolic Vicar of Korea, mentioned this translation several times in November in his letters, and ratified it with his seal on November 25, sending it to France. This study demonstrates that Sire.L.13 was composed and dedicated to the pope through this process. Third, Sire.L.13 proves to be the first work which translated the whole text of a papal bull into Korean, as well as a rare old Hangul manuscript whose original text, translator, and the date of translation can be determined with great certainty. Besides, this manuscript demonstrates translation technique, vocabularies, usages, and notation adopted by Korean Catholics during the 1860s, and illustrates how they express into Korean the dogmatic definition of the immaculate conception of Mary, scriptural and patristic testimonies on Mary, and technical terms related to liturgies and rites and ecclesiastical offices. For this reason, Sire.L.13 will be an invaluable source material for the 19th century Latin-Korean glossary.

이 연구는 바티칸도서관에 소장된 옛한글 필사본 Sire.L.13을 소개하 고 그 의의를 밝힌다. 이 필사본은 1854년 성모 마리아의 원죄 없으신 잉 태 교리를 선포한 교황 비오 9세(Pius IX)의 교황칙서(Bulla) “형언할 수 없으신 하느님”(Ineffabilis Deus)을 조선말로 번역한 자료이다. 이 연구는 Sire.L.13에 대한 최초의 연구로, 이 필사본의 의의를 다음과 같이 제시한다. 첫째, 생-쉴피스 신학교 교장 시르(Marie-Dominique Sire) 신부는 비 오 9세의 교황칙서를 전 세계 언어로 번역하여 교황에게 헌정하는 프로젝 트를 추진했으며, 이 옛한글 번역본은 이러한 세계적인 프로젝트의 결과물이다. 둘째, 시르 신부의 번역 요청 편지는 1863년 2월경에 조선에 전달되었 지만, “형언할 수 없으신 하느님” 라틴어 본문은 6월 말경에야 도착했다. 다블뤼(Marie-Nicolas-Antoine Daveluy) 주교가 라틴어 본문을 한글로 번역했으며, 조선 천주교인들은 이를 필사하고 아름다운 꽃문양으로 장식 했고, 이러한 번역과 필사와 장식 작업은 9월 8일 이전에 완료되었다. 조 선대목구장 베르뇌(Siméon Berneux) 주교는 11월에 작성한 여러 편지에 서 이 번역본을 언급하며, 11월 25일에 인준하여 프랑스로 보냈다. 이 연 구는 Sire.L.13이 이러한 과정을 거쳐 제작되고 헌정된 문헌임을 밝힌다. 셋째, Sire.L.13은 교황칙서 전문을 한글로 번역한 최초의 자료로서, 저 본과 번역자와 번역 시기를 확정할 수 있는 옛한글 필사본이다. 이 필사본 은 1860년대 조선천주교의 라틴어 본문의 한글 번역 방식, 어휘, 용례, 표 기법을 보여주며, 마리아의 무염시태에 대한 교리 정의와 성경과 교부의 마리아에 대한 증언, 또한 당대의 전례와 교회의 직책 등을 조선말로는 어 떻게 표현했는지 알려준다. 따라서 Sire.L.13은 19세기 라틴어-한글 용어 사전 작업을 위한 중요한 원천자료가 될 것이다.
