This paper attempted to examine the characteristics of the character shape seen in the process of transforming an actual figure in history into a protagonist of a novel through the transmission of a biography, centering on Wang Cuiqiao. As a result, it was confirmed that Wang Cuiqiao in the historical record was insignificant as a Gisaeng, but gradually became the main character of a rich narrative in the process of transmission and creation of stories related to her. In biography of Wang Cuiqiao, which rrecorded the oral narrative and added reviews, a complete life narrative was given through Wang Cuiqiao's origins, gisaeng life, relationships with male characters, and death. In the novel work created based on this, the composition of Wang Cuiqiao's origin, the story of becoming a gisaeng, and the ending after death were changed to change the shape of Wang Cuiqiao. Wang Cuiqiao, whose name was only mentioned in the historical records, became a rare wicked woman and a chivalrous woman through the transmission and creation process of the narrative. The study, which looked at the traces of Wang Cuiqiao which has drawn attention throughout East Asia, is expected to contribute to re-examining the universality and specificity of biography of Wang Cuiqiao as an East Asian narrative in the future.

본고에서는 왕취교(王翠翹)를 중심으로 역사 속 실존 인물이 일대기의 전승을 거쳐 소설 작품의 주인공으로 변화하는 과정에서 보이는 인물 형상 의 특징을 살펴보고자 하였다. 그 결과 역사 기록 속 왕취교는 서해 막하의 일개 기생으로서 그 존재가 미미했으나, 그와 관련한 이야기가 전승ㆍ창작 되는 과정에서 점차 풍부한 내력 서사의 주인공으로 거듭나게 되었음을 확 인할 수 있었다. 설화를 기록하고 평을 덧붙인 ‘왕취교전’에서는 왕취교의 출신부터 기생 생활, 남성 인물들과의 인연, 그리고 죽음이라는 결말을 통 해 온전한 생애 서사를 부여하였다. 이를 바탕으로 창작된 소설 작품에서는 왕취교의 출신성분, 기생이 된 사연, 죽음 이후의 결말을 새롭게 바꾸어 왕 취교의 형상을 변화시켰다. 왕취교는 이야기의 전승과 창작 과정을 통해 희 대의 간녀(奸女)로, 다시 의협녀(義俠女)로 정체를 달리하게 된 것이다. 동 아시아 전역에서 주목받았던 ‘왕취교’의 자취를 살펴본 이번 연구는 장차 ‘왕취교전’이 동아시아 서사물로서 지닌 보편성과 특수성을 재조명하는 데 기여하는 바가 있으리라 기대한다.
