This study aims to identify the overall process of changes in local earthenware in the Hanju region, located in the northernmost part of Silla; based on this, an attempt is made to establish a chronology of the earthenware for the region. As an introductory study, our research focused on gobes(mounted dishes), bottles, and lidded bowls, the main models of earthenware. By dividing the period into 9 phases, according to changes in the pottery types and patterns of each model, we identified the changes and established dates ranging from the late 6th to early 10th century. The proposed chronology for the Hanju region shows some changes in common with that for the Gyeongju area, the capital of Silla, but with no small differences. As for the gobes, for example, short gobes were prevalent in the region until the latter period of the Silla era, unlike in the Gyeongju area of Wanggyeong or the Chungju area of Sogyeong, where notched band gobes were popular. Flat-bottom bottles appeared in various forms, spherical or hemispherical, and were used simultaneously during the same periods; however, certain changes were noted in terms of each type, with the bottle’s body being either flattened or elongated toward the end. From this study's Phase III—later than in the Gyeongju area—some spherical and hemispherical flat-bottom bottles were converted to mounted bottles, but others did not disappear and coexisted with them for some time. In addition to the mounted bottles, bowls were positioned as one of the main pottery types from Phase V; the division of the surface by a pair of parallel lines, one of the characteristics of the mounted bottles, completely disappeared in the late 7th century in the Gyeongju area but stayed popular until the early 8th century in the Hanju area. Overall, it was found that the trend in the Hanju area lagged behind that of the Gyeongju area but lasted longer.

본고에서는 신라 최북단에 위치한 한주 지방토기의 전체적인 변화과정을 살펴보고, 편년안을 설정해 보았다. 시론적 의미에서 주된 기종인 고배와 병, 유개합에 한정하여 살펴보았는데 각 기종의기형과 문양구성의 변화에 따라 모두 9기로 분기하여 변화상을 밝히고 각 분기별로 6세기 후반에서10세기 전반에 이르는 연대를 설정하였다. 제시된 편년안은 중앙의 경주지역과 비교하여 보면 전체적으로 공통되는 변화상이 있지만 차이점도 적지 않다. 고배의 경우 왕경의 경주지역이나 소경인 충주지역과 달리 돌대고배가 유행하지 않고단각고배 위주로 늦은 시기까지 존속되는 특징이 있다. 평저 병은 구형과 반구형의 다양한 형식으로출현하여 병존에 갔는데 동체가 편구화되어 납작해지거나 종장으로 장신화되는 등 각 형식별로 일정한 방향으로 변화하는 흐름이 확인된다. 경주지역보다 늦은 본고 3기부터 평저의 구형과 반구형병 일부는 대부장경병으로 전환되었지만 나머지는 소멸하지 않고 대부장경병과 일정 기간 병존하였다. 합은 대부장경병과 함께 본고 5기부터는 주된 기종으로 자리 잡았는데 특징 중 하나인 침선대에의한 기면분할이 경주지역의 경우 7세기 후반대에는 모두 없어졌지만 한주지방에서는 7기인 8세기전반 대까지 오랫동안 유행이 지속되었다. 전반적으로 경주지역보다 유행 속도가 한 단계 늦고, 길게 지속되는 특징을 보인다.
