Since its establishment in 1919, Mt. Geumgang Electric Railway Co., Ltd. has been operating both railroad and electricity projects with the aim of developing Mt. Geumgang. However, it can be seen that the Mt. Geumgang Railway and hydroelectric power generation projects were launched in earnest after highly evaluating the industrial economy, growth, and profitability of the Gangwon-do area around Mt. Geumgang. In other words, the high expectations for passenger and cargo transportation from Cheolwon to Naegeumgang as a culture ship for the state-owned (national) Gyeongwon Line seem to have been socially and economically expected, including increased transportation convenience to Mt. Geumgang tourism, regional industrial development, logistics distribution, and increased floating population. In other words, it seems that the development of Mt. Geumgang was more valuable because the social and economic effect linked to it was greater than that of simple tourism. In addition, it emphasizes that the purpose of developing Japanese colonial era as the best scenic spot in the East as an international tourist destination at home and abroad, and the development takes into account the natural scenery and cultural facilities of Mt. Geumgang. In other words, the space called Mt. Geumgang, which the Japanese colonial era Japanese Empire paid attention to, was of high value as a rich natural resource covering economic and cultural complex industries, which has great implications for today or the future. It can be seen that Geumgangsan Electric Railway Co., Ltd. participated in the development of Mt. Geumgang in earnest and had a leading influence on the development of the modern Mt. Geumgang tourism business.

금강산전기철도주식회사는 1919년 설립된 이래, 금강산개발을 주목적으로 철도사업과 전기사업을 겸영하였다. 다만 이는 비단 금강산관광에만 그치는 것이 아니라 금강산 일대의 강원도 권역의 산업 경제성과 성장성, 수익 사업성 을 높이 평가한 후에 금강산 철도 부설 및 수력발전 사업을 본격적으로 착수했 던 것을 확인할 수 있다. 즉 국유(국철) 경원선의 배양선으로서 철원에서 내금 강에 이르는 철도를 부설함과 동시에 여객 및 화물 운송의 기대치가 높았던 것은 결과적으로 금강산관광으로의 교통 편의성의 증대와 지역 산업 발전, 물류유통의 활성화, 유동 인구의 증대 등 사회, 경제적으로 기대하는 바가 컸던 것으로 보인다. 즉 단순 관광을 목적으로 했다고 하기 보다는 그것과 연계되는 사회적 경제효과가 컸기 때문에 금강산개발이 더욱 가치가 있었던 것으로 보인 다. 또한 금강산은 일제강점기 동양 최고의 절승지라고 강조하고 있으며, 이는 국내외의 국제 관광지로서의 개발을 목적으로 하고 있음을 알 수 있으며, 금강 산 자연 풍경과 금강산이 가지고 있는 문화적 시설 등의 유지, 보전을 고려하는 개발이라는 것도 확인할 수 있었다. 즉 일제강점기 일본제국이 주목했던 금강산 이라는 공간은, 경제, 문화적 복합 산업이 망라되어 있는 풍부한 자연 자원으로 서 가치가 높았으며 이는 오늘날, 또는 미래에 시사하는 바가 크다고 할 수 있다. 금강산전기철도주식회사는 이러한 금강산개발에 본격적으로 참여한 기 업이며, 근대 금강산개발에 박차를 가하는 데 그 단초를 제공하였다.
