This paper analyzes the characteristics of a place of Mt. Geumgang through the travel writings of Westerners in the modern period. A place that is given meaning to is a subjective and experiential space, which is an important component of local identity. From the pre-modern times to the present, Mt. Geumgang has been the most significant scenic spot in Gangwon-do, or rather, in the whole country, and has always been visited. The westerners who visited Korea in the modern era also climbed there, and, through the records they left behind, it is possible to more three-dimensionally identify its characteristics of a place that was formed in the process of intricately interlocking the perceptions of the locals and the outsiders. First of all, this paper catalogues the records of travel to Mt. Geumgang by Westerners in the modern period and categorizes them into three parts on the basis of the purpose of the trip. The visitors mainly went to Mt. Geumgang for the purposes of simple excursions, geography and ecology research, and newsgathering and reporting, each of which is, in some cases, mixed. They chose Mt. Geumgang, in particular, among the many mountains in Korea because of its high reputation among Koreans and Japanese. Due to the geographic location of Mt. Geumgang as the midpoint between Seoul and Wonsan, an open port, it was also easy for them to plan to travel between the two cities. Next, the paper examines the characteristics of a place revealed in the writings on traveling to Mt. Geumgang. Most travel journals describe the three processes of travel preparation-journey-arrival to Mt. Geumgang, and, at each stage, similar descriptions are repeated. They all have the mentions on the beauty of the landscape of Mt. Geumgang and on the temples and Buddhism, but, in many cases, they are limited to immediate and superficial appreciation. The writings, rather, deal with the Korean themselves and their customs mostly that they confront during the travel preparation and travel, which means that Mt. Geumgang was not the object of deep consideration for the western travelers. On the other hand, James Gale and Norbert Weber, both of whom were familiar with Korean culture, showed strong interest in Mt. Geumgang itself and each of their writings reveals the characteristics of a place from Sadaebu /monks’ point of view. This study have meanings in that, through the comparison with travelogues by the Koreans, it suggests one foundation for a more holistic study on the characteristics of Mt. Geumgang.

본고는 19세기 말~20세기 초 시기 서양인의 여행기를 통해 금강산의 장소성 을 분석한 것이다. 장소란 의미가 부여된 주관적이며 경험적인 공간으로, 지역 정체성을 구성하는 중요한 요소이다. 금강산은 전근대 시기부터 지금에 이르기 까지 강원도, 나아가 한국을 대표하는 명승지로 많은 사람들이 유람했던 곳이 다. 근대 한국을 방문했던 서양인들도 예외는 아니었는데, 그들이 남긴 기록을 통해 내국인과 외부인의 인식이 복잡하게 맞물리는 과정에서 구성되는 장소성 을 보다 입체적으로 규명할 수 있다. 우선 19세기 말~20세기 초 서양인이 남긴 금강산 여행 기록을 목록화하고 여행의 목적에 따라 세 가지로 분류하였다. 이들은 단순 유람, 지리와 생태 조사, 취재 및 보고의 목적으로 금강산을 방문했으며, 때로는 여러 목적이 뒤섞인 경우 도 있었다. 대부분의 여행기가 여행준비-여정-금강산 도착의 과정을 서술하였으 며, 각 단계마다 유사한 서술이 반복됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 금강산에 대해서는 경관의 아름다움과 사찰 및 불교에 대한 언급이 빠지지 않지만, 즉물적이고 피상 적인 감상에 그치는 경우가 많았다. 오히려 여행준비나 여정에서 경험한 한국인 이나 한국의 풍습에 대한 서술이 큰 비중을 차지하였으며, 이는 금강산이 그들에 게 깊이 있는 고찰의 대상으로 여겨지지 않았음을 의미한다. 한편 한국의 문화에 익숙했던 제임스 게일이나 노르베르트 베버의 경우는 금강산 자체에 대한 관심을 강하게 드러냈는데, 이들의 여행기에는 각기 사대부적/수도승의 관점에서의 장소성이 엿보였다. 이후 내국인 여행기와의 비교를 통해 금강산의 장소성에 대한 보다 총체적인 연구의 기반을 마련했다는 점에서 본 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
