, known as one of the 12 madang of Pansori, could not be fully identified in detail by lack of relevant materials but later, it started to draw new attention when its related records were discovered. In general, Pansori is a concept that refers to Pansori play on a performance space, books that contributes to the establishment of Pansori’s Saseol, and Pansori novels. is a story that Gangneung Sato and Gisaeng Maehwa together make fun of Golsaengwon by stripping him naked. It is not clearly suggested why they try to mock Golsaengwon. In this respect, the work weakens its satirical characteristics but emphasizes Golsaengwon’s character as an excessively lascivious person despite his status as a noble yangban. In the plot of this work, Golsaengwon and Maehwa’s encounter, love, separation, and suffering respectively, while the parts of two characters’ encounter and love, which make up the first half of the story, consist of a relatively brief Saseol, those of their parting and suffering are described in considerable detail. For example, two scenes of buying a present in the market and expressing love by making a painter draw a picture are impressively highlighted. Golsaengwon character shows some discord of so-called physical and social qualities, for instance, as a yangban who has an ugly appearance and a huge penis, creating a grotesque atmosphere. This peculiarity is more revealed in terms of location of Gangneung and Seoul as contrasted and structured spaces. It can be seen that the figure of Golsaengwon is based on the appearance of yangban reflected in the eyes of people who are not yangban. In the ending of , there is a direct statement by the narrator, “Well, everyone in this world, please listen! When you come across Golsaengwon, beware of not ruining yourselves by drinking and sensual pleasures!” But, in this story, the meaning of ‘punishment for indulging drinking and lust’ mentioned by the narrator is not clearly expressed. Therefore, we can say that the more reasonable approach to this story is to pay attention to ‘the fun itself caused by the process of deceiving Golsaengwon.’

<강릉매화타령>은 판소리 12마당의 하나로 알려져 있었으나 자료가 전해 지지 않아 구체적인 내용을 파악할 수 없었으나, 관련 기록이 연이어 발견되 면서 새롭게 주목되었다. 일반적으로 ‘판소리’는 연행공간에서 연행되는 판 소리와 판소리 사설을 정착시킨 창본, 판소리계 소설을 아울러 지칭하는 개념이다. <강릉매화타령>은 강릉 사또와 기생 매화의 공모로 골생원을 발가벗겨 웃음 거리로 만드는 이야기이다. 그렇지만 무슨 이유로 골생원을 웃음거리로 만들고 자 하는지에 대한 이유가 분명하게 제시 되어 있지 않다. 이런 점에서 이 작품은 풍자적 성격은 약화 되어 있지만, 골생원이 양반 신분으로 지나치게 색을 밝히 는 인물이라는 점이 역으로 강조되는 특성을 가지고 있다. 작품 구조를 볼 때도 골생원과 매화의 만남, 사랑, 이별, 수난이라는 이야기의 흐름 중에서, 전반부에 해당하는 골생원과 매화의 만남과 사랑 대목은 비교적 간략한 사설로 짜여져 있는 반면에, 이별과 골생원의 수난 대목은 상당히 자세 하게 부연되어 있다. 시장에서 정표를 사는 장면, 환쟁이에게 그림을 그리게 해서 사랑을 표현하는 장면 등이 인상적으로 부각된다. 골생원은 양반 신분을 가지고 있지만, 추한 외모에 거대한 성기를 가지고 있는 등 신체적 자질과 사회적 자질 사이에 큰 괴리를 보이며 기괴함을 낳게 한다. 이는 공간적으로 강릉과 서울의 대비화된 그리고 구조화된 공간을 통해 더 잘 드러난다. 기본적으로 골생원의 형상은 ‘양반이 아닌 사람들’ 눈에 비친 양반의 모습에 토대를 두고 있음을 알 수 있다. <매화가라> 결말 부분에는 “世上 사암덜아 骨生員으로 볼지아도 쥬삭탐을 부 마소”라는 서술자의 직접적인 언술이 나온다. 자료를 보면, 서술자가 언급 한 ‘주색을 탐하는 것에 대한 징계’라는 의미도 명확하게 부각되지 않는다. 때문에 ‘골생원을 속이는 과정에서 나타나는 그 자체의 재미’를 주목하는 것이 오히려 실상에 접근하는 태도로 인식된다.
