This study aims to empirically analyze the relationship between greenhouse-gas emission levels and corporate performance in Korean petrochemical companies. To do this, as an indicator of corporate performance, we employ the concept of technical efficiency based on production theory and distance function. For a variable for the level of greenhouse gas emission, we rely on the greenhouse-gas emission intensity that is often used as a variable indicating the level of greenhouse gas emission for a firm. In addition, using stochastic frontier analysis, we investigate the impact of greenhouse-gas emission intensity on technical efficiency and examine the marginal effect of greenhouse-gas emission intensity on technical inefficiency. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the greenhouse-gas emission intensity has a negative impact on technical efficiency. Second, the average technical efficiency of the companies analyzed was about 0.794. Third, the average value of the marginal effect of greenhouse-gas emission intensity is about 0.229.

본 연구는 국내 석유화학기업을 대상으로 온실가스배출 수준과 기업성과 사이의 관계를 분석하였다. 구체적으로 기업성과를 나타내는 지표로 생산이론 및 거리함수에 바탕을 둔 기술적 효율성의 개념을 차용하였고 온실가스배출 수준에 대한 변수로는 기업의 온실가스배출 강도를 나타내는 변수로 자주 사용되는 온실가스배출 원단위를 채택하였다. 그리고 확률변경분석을 적용하여 기술적 비효율성에 미치는 온실가스배출 원단위의 효과를 분석하였고, 기술적 효율성에 미치는 온실가스배출 원단위의 한계효과도 검토하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 온실가스배출 원단위는 석유화학기업의 기술적 효율성에 음의 영향을 주었다. 둘째, 분석대상 석유화학기업의 평균 기술적 효율성의 값은 0.794이다. 셋째, 기술적 비효율성에 미치는 온실가스배출 원단위의 한계효과에 대한 평균값은 약 0.229이다.
