This study examines the relationship between the number of Taiwanese tourists visiting South Korea and economic variables. As economic variables, Taiwan’s real GDP per capita, real exchange rate and jet fuel price were considered. For the analysis, cointegration analysis based on the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, which is more flexible than the existing cointegration analysis technique, was applied. It was found that the number of Taiwanese tourists visiting South Korea increases in the long run as the real GDP per capita of Taiwan increases and the real value of the won per Taiwan dollar decreases. As jet fuel price increases, however, the number of Taiwanese tourists visiting South Korea increases in the long run, which contradicts economic intuition. However, the coefficient estimated was not only small but also statistically insignificant. The empirical findings indicate that Taiwan’s tourism demand for South Korea is significantly affected by Taiwan’s real GDP per capita and real exchange rate. These results can be used to enhance the efficiency of the tourism and leisure industry and to establish tourism policies.

본 연구는 한국을 방문하는 대만 관광객의 수와 경제변수들 간의 관계를 살펴보았다. 경제변 수로는 1인당 실질 GDP, 실질환율 그리고 제트유가격을 고려하였다. 분석을 위해 기존의 공적분 분석기 법보다 유연한 자기회귀분포시차(Autoregressive Distributed Lag, ARDL)모형에 기반한 공적분 분석을 적용하였다. 분석 결과 대만의 실질 1인당 GDP가 증가할수록, 1대만달러 당 원화의 실질가치가 하락할 수록 한국을 방문하는 대만 관광객 수가 장기적으로 증가함을 발견하였다. 반면 제트유가격이 증가할수 록 한국을 방문하는 대만 관광객 수는 장기적으로 증가하는 것으로 나타나 경제적 직관을 위배하였으나 추정된 계수값이 작고 통계적으로 0과 유의하게 다르지 않았다. 요컨대 대만의 방한 관광수요는 대만의 실질 1인당 GDP와 실질환율에 장기적으로 유의한 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 관광수요 추정 결과는 관광･레저산업의 효율성을 높이고 관광정책을 수립하는데 활용이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.
