Moby Dick, published in 1851, is one of the most famous novels in the world. This American maritime novel was inspired by Shakespeare's tragedies and the Bible as well as Cetatology based on writer's experience of the crew of the whaling ship for four years since 1841. It has long been discussed that Shakespeare's major tragedies reflecting a revenge tragedy of a white whale are Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth and some aspects of the tragedies in language, emotion effects, circumstances, and tragedic behaviours can also be found in many parts of Moby Dick (Rice 1970; Smith 1981; Heflin 2004; Yoo 2006; Lee 2011; Cooper 2012; Sharmin 2013). However, there are few studies related to Shakespeare's tragedies. Moreover, there are no previous studies on methodology of digital humanities. Therefore, Moby Dick reflecting Shakespearen influence needs to be revisited and re-examined by using digital analysis methodology such as sentiment analysis through text mining and visualization. In this paper, we will re-examine the influence of Four Great Tragedies of Shakespeare such as Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth on Moby Dick through sentiment analysis using a VADER sentiment word-list, focusing on comparison of a novel and these tragedy plays as well as comparison of two characters of Ishmael and Aahab versus four characters of Hamlet, Iago, Lear, and Macbeth. These results are expected to contribute to a case study of research and education of digital humanities and artificial intelligence for English literature in an era of the 4th industry revolution.
