Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most important crops cultivated worldwide. In Korea, tomato industry has been consistently grown up due to the expanding area of greenhouse cultivation and also increasing consumer demand. National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science of Rural Development Administration (RDA) has conducted research to develop our own tomato cultivars since 1950s. After the 2000s, diverse breeding objectives have been set up including rootstock, ornamental, sweet cherry and virus resistant tomatoes in order to cope with the rapidly changing market trends. In 2021, the numbers of registered tomato cultivars developed by RDA is 21 based on the Korea Seed and Variety Service (KSVS). Representatively, tomato cultivars ‘Powerguard’ for rootstock, ‘Tomlittle’ for ornamental with medium fruit size, ‘Wonye9014’ with sweet cherry fruits and ‘Ty-sun’ with TYLCV resistance and large fruit size are included in the list. Since each cultivar has its own useful characteristics, they are expected to be utilized in diverse places from garden to farm.
