The study is aim to determine the severity of depression among police officers, and to identify the characteristics of depression experienced by police officers by analyzing the correlation between the depression level and demographic sociological and organizational characteristics. And countermeasures to reduce depression of police officials were presented. In this study, the Korean version of the depression screening tool(PHQ-9) was used to measure the level of depression among police officials. Although the depression level of the majority of the survey subjects was not very high, more than 30% of the subjects had mild or more depression. As a result of ANOVA of group averages based on demographic and organizational characteristics and depression level of the survey subjects, the results did not reach a statistically significant level. The case with no religion was higher than the case with religion. Ages in 20s, 50s or older, 30s and 40s were in order, and marital status was unmarried, divorced, and married. The level of depression decreased as the level of education, the rank and the working period increased. There was a statistically significant difference between the work department and the level of depression, followed by investigation/detective, public order management/traffic, internal service, police box. In this study, as a countermeasure for coping with depression among police officers, early detection and thorough management of police officers at risk of depression, control access to weapon use by high risk police officers, effective use of depression response programs, and strengthening of legal responses related to mental health were proposed. In the future, this study will be revised and supplemented through subsequent research and advanced analysis based on large-scale sampling and structured tools to present more meaningful research results.

이 연구에서는 경찰공무원의 우울증 실태를 파악하여 그 심각성의 수준을 확인하고, 경찰공무원 의 우울증 수준과 인구사회학적·조직적 특성의 상관관계를 분석하여 경찰공무원이 경험하는 우울증 의 특징을 파악하고자 하였으며, 경찰공무원의 우울증을 줄이기 위한 대처방안들을 제시하였다. 경찰공무원의 우울증 수준의 측정은 한국어판 우울증 선별도구(PHQ- 9)를 활용하였는데, 조사대 상자 다수의 우울증 수준은 그리 높지 않게 나타났지만, 경증도 이상의 우울증을 가지고 있는 경우 가 30% 이상 나타나 결코 적지 않은 수준이었다. 조사대상자의 인구사회학적 특성 및 조직적 특성 과 우울증 수준을 요인으로 하여 집단별 평균을 분산분석(ANOVA)한 결과 통계적으로 유의미한 수 준에 이르지는 못 하였으나, 성별은 여성이 남성보다, 종교여부는 종교가 없는 경우가 종교가 있는 경우보다 높게 나타났다. 연령은 20대, 50대 이상, 30대, 40대 순, 결혼 상태는 미혼, 이혼, 기혼 순으 로 나타났다. 학력 수준은 학력 수준이 높아질수록 우울 수준이 낮아졌고, 계급은 초임 계급인 순경· 경장에서부터 계급이 올라갈수록 우울증 수준이 낮아졌으며, 근무 연한은 근무 기간이 길어질수록 우울증 수준이 낮아지는 것으로 나타났다. 근무부서와 우울증 수준에서는 통계적으로 유의미한 차이 가 드러났는데 수사·형사, 경비·교통, 내근직, 지구대·파출소 순으로 나타났다. 이 연구에서는 경찰공무원의 우울증 대처방안으로 우울증 위험 경찰공무원의 조기발견 및 관리 철저, 고위험 경찰공무원의 무기사용 접근 통제, 우울증 대응 프로그램의 효율적 운용, 정신건강 관 련 법적 대응의 강화를 제안하였다. 향후 대규모의 표집과 구조화된 도구를 바탕으로 한 후행연구와 고급분석을 통해서 이 연구를 수정·보완하여 좀 더 의미 있는 연구 결과를 제시하고자 한다.
