The Japanese detective story, which began with the transfer of Western detective stories, shows a unique development that is different from western detective stories. This paper centers on the literary work of Edogawa-Ranpo from the end of Taishou to the early showa. Before 1945, Japanese detective stories were divided into “authentic detective story” and “altered detective story”, and it again led to the expansion of the area of detective stories. Until now, it was common to interpret the prevalence of “altered” detective story in Japan because of the influence of Edgar Allan Poe’s novels, or because Japanese exploration novels have their origins in the work of writers such as Tanizaki-Juniciro. But it is an interpretation that is overly focused only on the artist. This is because the development of popular literature can be interpreted not only by the artist, but also in the social and cultural context. This paper describes the situation from the appearance of Edogawa-Ranpo to the golden age of detective novels before and after 1930. chapter 3, the historical and cultural background of the “altered” detective novel appeared from the perspective of the cultural history of “hentai”. Since the mid-1910s, I have looked at the transfer and development aspects of abnormal psychology and abnormal sexuality that have been noted as new studies, and have illuminated discussions on modern literature and abnormal psychology. In chapter 4, I reconsidered the value of Edo Edogawa-Ranpo and his altered detective novels in terms of the relationship between publishing business and popularism. This explained how detective novels aimed at memorial service expanded the realm and why they went in the direction of altered detective novels symbolized by erotic and grotesque.

영미 탐정소설의 이식에서 출발한 일본 탐정소설은 서구의 detective story와 는 다른 독특한 전개 양상을 보여준다. 본 논문에서는 다이쇼 말기부터 쇼와 초 기에 걸친 에도가와 란포(江戸川乱歩)의 행보를 축으로 하여, 전전(戰前)기 일본 탐정소설이 ‘본격’과 ‘변격’으로 분화되고 그것이 다시 탐정소설 영역의 확장으 로 이어지는 과정을 고찰하였다. 지금까지 일본에서 ‘변격’탐정소설이 유행하게 된 것은 에드거 앨런 포(Edgar Allan Poe)소설의 영향이 짙었다던가, 또는 일본탐 정소설은 다니자키 준이치로(谷崎潤一郎)와 같은 순문학작가들의 작품에 기원을 두고 있기 때문이라는 견해가 지배적이었다. 하지만 이와 같은 점에서 원인을 찾는 것은 지나치게 작가에게만 초점을 맞춘 해명이라는 한계를 지닌다. 대중문 학의 전개, 혹은 유행의 배경은 작가뿐만 아니라 그것을 향유하는 독자를 포함 하는 사회적･문화적 맥락에서 고찰할 때 보다 입체적인 해석이 가능하기 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 에도가와 란포의 등장에서부터 탐정소설의 황금기를 맞 이하게 되는 1930년 전후까지의 상황을 설명하고, 당시의 탐정소설계 내부에서 일어난 균열과 길항의 양상을 에도가와 란포와 고가 사부로를 중심으로 고찰하 였다. 그리고 3장에서는 탐정소설계 외부에서, ‘변격’탐정소설이 등장하게 되기 까지의 역사적, 문화적 배경을 ‘변태’의 문화사라는 관점에서 조명하였다. 1910 년대 중반부터 새로운 학문으로 주목받았던 변태심리학과 변태성욕에 대한 이 입과 전개 양상을 고찰하고, 근대문학과 변태심리에 대한 문학자들의 언설을 조 명하였다. 4장에서는 출판상업주의와 대중독자가 형성해가는 문화 지형 속에서 에도가와 란포와 그의 변격탐정소설의 가치를 재고하고 이를 통해 추리를 목적 으로 하는 탐정소설이 어떻게 해서 영역을 확장하게 되었는지, 그리고 그것은 왜 에로그로로 상징되는 변격탐정소설의 방향으로 나아갔는지를 고찰하였다.
