This study aimed to understand the experiences of out-of-school youth in their ecological system. Thirteen adolescents who dropped out of their school participated in this study to share their experiences about their lives in relation to their family, school, and community ecologies. From their experiences studied in-depth, thirty-three meaning units were discovered. These were organized under thirteen main themes and categorized into four clusters. Findings indicated that the participants felt that their school life was not meaningful and their learning was not useful. Also, they had negative experiences with their teachers and schools because of the unequal treatment of students and the injustice of their teachers’ behaviors or sayings. These participants also had parents that cared for them less in comparison to how their siblings were treated, especially when their siblings performed better academically or when there was preferential treatment for boys at home. Participants reported being alienated and ignored at home and in their communities when they dropped out of school. In this process, they experienced conflicts with most of their teachers and parents. However, participants respected teachers who cared for them and understood them. A positive community was a center for youth as a place for participants to meet their friends and to study with teachers. Therefore, establishing a cooperative system within and outside the ecological system for at-risk youth outside of schools, improving the environment and culture, developing programs that reflect needs, and educating parents and teachers on how to guide the new generation of youth are suggested.

본 연구는 증가하는 학교 밖 청소년 개인적·사회적인 문제의 심각성에 주목하며, 이들의 학업중단과 관련한 생태체계 속 삶의 경험을 심층적으로 조명하고 그 의미와 본질을 밝히고자 하였다. 이에 2년 이상 학업중단 경험을 가진 13명의 학교 밖 청소년을 연구 참여자로 연구를 수행한 결과, 4개 범주에서 33개의 소주제를 도출하여 13개의 대주제로 유목화하였다. 연구 참여자들은 한 개체로서 학교교육은 대입 수능을 준비하는 학생들을 위한 교육이며 자신에게는 시간낭비이며 무의미한 교육이라는 인식을 갖게 되었고, 교사나 동료와의 갈등문제 등으로 학업중단을 결심하였다. 이후, 학업중단 동료상담은 자신의 삶을 재점검하고 반성하는 계기가 되었다. 가정 생태체계 속에서 여학생들은 공부만 강조하며 남아선호사상을 가진 부모님으로 인해 깊은 상처를 받았다. 학교에서는 경쟁적인 교육문화로 우열반을 나누며 공부 잘하는 학생만을 챙기며 위기학생을 존중하지 않는 교사에게서 불공정함과 불신을 경험하였다. 반면, 자신들에게 관심을 주며 배려한 교사에게는 감사하는 마음을 간직하고 있었다. 지역사회 생태체계 속에서 이들은 일반인의 차별, 편견, 무시에도 불구하고 주변의 의미있는 타인들로 인해 사회생활을 학습하는 계기가 되었다. 특히, 청소년 센터의 교사는 이들에게 매우 의미있는 존재이며, 이 공간은 자발적인 학습과 사회적 지지체계가 형성되는 장소임이 밝혀졌다. 이에, 학교 밖 청소년과 위기학생들 삶의 생태체계 내외적인 협업 시스템 구축, 문화와 환경 개선, 요구를 반영한 프로그램 개발, 신세대 청소년 지도을 위한 부모와 교사의 교육 등을 제언하였다.
